I went to see the "world famous Lipizzaner show" Now I know I should have done a bit more "research" but I just assumed it was the Horses from the Spanish Riding school in Vienna but they weren't. The horses are Lipizzaner but are trained by in America and then sent round the world doing shows. The horses were Ok but the big fat American compare was condescending and grating. He spoiled the whole show most of which was taken up by him talking. Now I have seen the Spanish riding school in action when they came to Wembly in 1977 and again 1985. I got my old programs out to check. Now they managed to fill the whole program with horses and no annoying compare. Oh well the "real" Lipizzaner's are coming to Birmingham in November but I have no way of getting there D
Noish.... A thing called 'the gala of the royal horses' toured here a few years ago. (In a great big tent formerly used by John Farnham's big tour, no less) and it was a lot of horse and a big lot of pretention. There were Lippizanners and a few other weird breeds, mostly big muscley buggers although there were some of those trim little whippetty ones as well. (I am so au fait with horse terms, as you can tell.) The nags were all dolled up in medieval horse armour with riders done up as knights or lords or whatever. Lots of formation stomping to classical music and the like. A middle ages monarch would have loved it. I love horses but was still bored sh!tless by halfway through. ANd it cost me $45 to get in - and get this, that was a HALF PRICE ticket I'd wangled through a work contact.
