Anyone want to read my words of wisdom regarding meeting Graeme? There's a photo at the end.
((In case there's issues with the graphic it says - "The Unbelievable Truth about the Unbelievable Truth TV recording))
As is the tradition, when the stars and planets align and Goodies fans happen to meet one (or more) of the Super Chaps Three, someone writes a report about it. As Jane Donnelly has met the Goodies (in this case Graeme Garden) many times, I thought it would be nice to write from the perspective of a first timer. That would be me, Nicole. I had missed seeing the recording of the pilot earlier in the year due to rostering issues. At one stage, Thursday was my day off. But then they had the bright idea of giving me the weekends off. While that's great, the downfall is events on during the week are no go. But, at the last minute my roster gave me two hours to get there, and so I took it. After missing the first bus, I got there without a hitch. In fact I was an hour early. They had told us to go to Redfern station, but I cleverly worked out that if I got off a stop earlier, I would be walking less. Genuis. Little did I know that Jane had also arrived early, I could've had some company. By the time we went in, I was feeling pretty lonely. But Jane was devious. She waited until I had given my name to be marked off the list, and then approached me. Now, I'm not the most talkative person at the best of times. But somehow, meeting a fellow Goodies fan, we had an instant connection. Also turned out that others were there on their own as well. We debated having a drink and decided not to. Jane had brought her Goodies t-shirt and went to get changed into it (she wasn't wearing it as she didn't want to stand out). I don't have a Goodies t-shirt. She had only just left when we were called in. We lined up again and were lead into the studio. They told us to turn our phones off, but people turned them on again for photos. Jane was shaking she was so excited and couldn't take one photo. She also noticed a camera right in front of where we were, and she hoped we'd still see Graeme. After a session of clapping and laughing 101 (yes, they teach you how to do it, it's an artform) Craig Reucassel (who would be hosting) came out and three audience members were drafted in to play a round as a way of explaining it. Julian Morrow, who wasn't on the show, gave the speech, which was about Qantas. Much hilarity ensued. Then the proper filming began. I won't give away too much about what happened except to say it will make an excellent show, and I'll be watching, even knowing the end result. Merrick Watts was up first, then Sarah Kendle, Graeme and lastly Andrew Hanson. Andrew displayed his disappointment at following a Goodie to which Craig replied "the baddie always follows the goodie" which set up their relationship for the whole show, with Craig delighting in taking points from Andrew. Anyone hoping for David Mitchell style rants will be disappointed. But that's not a bad thing. As the show is more visual, there are props and displays on the screen to supplement the speeches. Merrick discussed makeup, Sarah spiders, Graeme talked about China and Andrew did nudity. And no, he wasn't nude, he just talked about it. The set changed for each speech, so there were gaps. During one of these lollies were thrown into the crowd. I'm very particular about the lollies I like, pretty much Minties and that's it. There were no Minties. I was almost buried in an avalanche of hard candy, which provided much amusement to everyone else. Great. After the main part had been recorded, Craig did a few jokes for the opening, and then we could go. Jane and I debated going over to Graeme. And by debated I mean Jane said "We should see Graeme" and I said, "Yeah, ok." We hung back a bit, okay I hung back a bit. But then the moment happened. If you've never met Graeme before, imagine what it would be like. It's a billion times better than that. For some reason I opened with "Hi. I'm Nicole" and shook his hand. Well, I'm polite. I knew his name, he didn't know mine. I'm not rude. I was always worried that how imagined it in the head would be better than reality. But I wasn't disappointed. Loveliest man in the world? Yes, I think so. Babe magnet? That too. While I wouldn't consider myself a "babe" as such, I feel completely magnetised to Graeme. The inner stuggle between wanting to get out of there as fast as I could before making an idiot of myself with never wanting to leave raged inside me. A total and utter fangirl moment. But leave we did. I know many of you will be disappointed in me for not asking Graeme for a hug. But honestly, I'm not. It was a big deal for me to talk to people, full stop, let alone people I'd never meet before. And just saying a few words to Graeme was more than I could ever ask for. I'll work up the courage to ask for a hug one day, but I'm happy with what happened. That and I don't ask for hugs from people I've just met. Not even if they're a Goodie. For those wanting proof who aren't on Facebook or Twitter, here you go:-

'Garden' variety fans. Easily identified and weeded out from other 'fans', by their attraction to 'fuzzy chops', large dark-rimmed glasses and brown corduroy jackets with elbow patches...and, most notably, the one who sported all of these. He, whose warmth, humour and talent is like 'blood and bone' to garden plants...without which they (and we) would surely wither and die. 'Go on...you know it makes sense!' |

I was amused by this Twitter post, which popped up in one of my Google searches (I don't know the person who wrote it):
"Is there a self-depricating name for admirers of Graeme Garden? May I recommend 'Garden Ho's'?" |
