Bill Oddie hopes to return to Springwatch

Springing back to Springwatch: 'Ousted' Bill Oddie in line for return to BBC show

By Mark Jefferies
24 Mar 2012 00:00

The 70-year-old claimed he left the BBC show due to an incident during filming and was not asked back by producers

Bill Oddie is set to return to TV’s Springwatch two years after quitting in mysterious circumstances.

The 70-year-old claimed he left the BBC show due to an incident during filming and was not asked back by producers.

But the wildlife expert could now be in the frame for a surprise return.

He said: “I am hoping that I might come back and do a few bits and pieces.

“I can’t pretend that I wouldn’t because it’s a programme I was there right from the start with and I was there for a long time.

“I am now thrust back – which I can’t say I enjoy doing – into the dreaded pitching and trying to sell yourself land.

"I have got plenty of ideas but you just sit around and wait and there’s an awful lot of that.”

Bill left Springwatch in January 2009, saying at the time: “It feels like the right time to take a breather and recharge my batteries.”

But two months ago he claimed his exit was down to something that happen-ed in filming on Brownsea Island in Dorset.

After several weeks, he spoke to his producer and asked what was going on. Giving no further details about the “incident”, he said: “I was called in, and was told, ‘We won’t be asking you to do Springwatch next year’.

"So that was the big shock. No one explained why... I started slipping into a depression that got worse and worse... now, of course, the BBC was splendidly off the hook.

“They could issue a statement saying they were terribly sorry Mr Oddie wasn’t well and that they wished me the best.

"This, of course, was the reason Mr Oddie wasn’t doing Springwatch. But it wasn’t.”

Speaking about the circumstances again at a screening for movie We Bought A Zoo in London this month, the Goodies star said: “It’s a long time ago and a failure of communications.

"I wasn’t well eventually – there was no question about that – and was in a situation where I couldn’t have given my best. Like a lot of big organisations perhaps they could have been more sympathetic.”

Birdwatcher Bill also claimed he was not surprised his former co-host Kate Humble has left the show.

Laughing, he said: “I hope she only finds that a humorous comment because I could get in to a lot of trouble here, but Kate nearly left every flipping year.

"Kate’s very versatile and there were lots of other things she wanted to do.”

A BBC spokesman said they had always been open to working with Bill again and hoped he would do things for the show in the future.

Staff Reporter, 18 March 2012

The BBC has confirmed that Matt Lucas’ new TV series The Matt Lucas Awards, the first production from Matt Lucas’ new production company John Stanley Productions, will air this spring.

The six-part panel show, made with the BBC, is a TV version of Lucas’ Radio 2 show And the Winner Is. In each episode, a small number of guests nominate people, places, songs and films to win the Lucas awards in the shape of a gold miniature naked Matt Lucas.

The awards are given out in Matt’s flat, where he is joined by his own mum and on keyboards by the renowned film composer David Arnold (five James Bond films, Independence Day) in front of a live studio audience.

In episode one, the guests are comedian Jason Manford, former Goodie Graeme Garden and German stand-up Henning Wehn. Future guests include Ruth Jones, Louis Walsh, Johnny Vegas, David Baddiel, Griff Rhys Jones, Richard Madeley and Maureen Lipman.

A pilot for the show was recorded last year,  with executive producer Mark Freeland and  Matt Lucas, producers Ashley Blaker and Alex Hardcastle, with director Alex Hardcastle.

review of "An Audience with Tim Brooke-Taylor" at Cardiff's New Theatre
more from same (British Comedy)
British ComedyFollowing is a review of "An Audience with Tim Brooke-Taylor" at Cardiff's New Theatre; this review appears online at http://cardiffian.jomec.co.uk/article/brooke-taylor-delivers-goodie-new-theatre

Brooke-Taylor delivers a Goodie at the New Theatre

Former Goodie Tim Brooke-Taylor lit up Cardiff's New Theatre with a night of witty banter and reflection on his long show business career.
Article | March 6, 2012 - 11:09am | By Cian Murray

What do John Cleese, Orson Welles and Alexander Armstrong all have in common?

The answer is they have all worked with comic actor Tim Brooke Taylor and if the good humoured questions and answers session held in Cardiff's New Theatre is anything to go by, they would all have greatly enjoyed the experience.

The event began with former BBC presenter Chris Searle discussing Brooke-Taylor's college years and his foray into theatre. The witty interactions coupled with some genuine nostalgia reminded the audience why Brooke-Taylor was, and in many cases still is, adored by lovers of comedy.

Brooke-Taylor studied economics and Law in Cambridge but he told the audience his passion lay with making people laugh, ever since he inadvertently got a magic trick wrong and left his classmates in hysterical laughter. This love of comedy sent Brooke-Taylor to the Cambridge Footlights university theatre society.

It was with Footlights Brooke-Taylor met John Cleese, Bill Oddie, Graham Chapman and Jonathan Lynn. Together the group toured the world with the Cambridge Circus. Brooke-Taylor, who was recently made an OBE, remembered this time with great affection although he did maintain that he did not believe it would lead to a career in comedy.

But Brooke-Taylor was always made for a show business career. He told the audience how the headmaster had written on one of his school reports: "If he fails his A-Levels, a career in musical comedy does not look unlikely."

His headmaster wasn't too far off the mark as Brooke-Taylor did make a splash in comedy, initially with At Last the 1948 Show, starring John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Marty Feldman, and then more famously with The Goodies.

As clips from Brooke-Taylor's various performances were shown amid questions from Searle, you couldn't help but feel like you were in the presence of a true comedy great. Brooke-Taylor's wit in describing how the BBC thought Marty Feldman's eyes might be too bizarre for television gave the event a relaxed, conversational mood.

Brooke-Taylor also touched on shows from later on in his career such as I'm Sorry, I Haven't a Clue, during which he said he saw Jack Dee as the perfect replacement for Humphrey Lyttelton, and his brief time working on One Foot in the Grave. He also touched on hisbrief time working with the difficult Orson Welles and on ill-fated medical drama TLC with Alexander Armstrong.

Brooke-Taylor told all his stories in his typically zany manner and concluded a wonderful evening with an audience discussion in which he shared his time generously with everyone.

Clearly, the audience were knowledgeable of Brooke-Taylor and in return he gave them their money's worth.

Comedy Guide article: "Tim Brooke-Taylor to host new animal-based BBC comedy sho
more from same (British Comedy)
British ComedyThe following article appears online at http://www.comedy.co.uk/news/story/00000774/tim_brooketaylor_hosts_everyone_loves_animals/

Tim Brooke-Taylor to host new animal-based BBC comedy show
Friday 9th March 2012 @ 2:50pm

Tim Brooke-Taylor is to take on his first major TV comedy project since The Goodies. The comedian will present a new family-orientated series called Everyone Loves Animals.

The six-part studio-based series will be presented as a spoof news programme featuring amusing animal-based clips which are packaged and presented as news stories.

Tim Brooke-Taylor, who still regularly appears on Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, will anchor the show, with assistance from a 'dog'. The 'newshound' will be played by a yet-to-be-named comic actor.

The duo will offer their differing perspectives on news from the animal kingdom. "From criminal cats to piano playing pugs, this is the news as you've never seen it before."

Tim Brooke-Taylor says: "When I was presented with the idea of this show I thought 'this sounds good'. Believe me it's much, much better than that. The only problem I have is being upstaged by very, very funny animals."

The show will be made by Talkback, the production company behind shows such as QI, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Celebrity Juice. Dan Baldwin, the company's Managing Director, comments: "As a nation of animal lovers, this series will get the whole family laughing, including your pets. It's the perfect teatime comedy treat. We're delighted with the commission and we're thrilled that Tim Brooke-Taylor has agreed to host this."

BBC commissioner Karl Warner adds: "We're really pleased to be working with Talkback on this new BBC1 series and we think it will offer a fresh take on a well-loved area for Saturday tea time."

Everyone Loves Animals will be broadcast on Saturday evenings later this spring.
