Frost Report Christmas special ticket request info
more from same (British Comedy)
British ComedyAs we mentioned a few days ago, Tim Brooke-Taylor is slated to take part in a special Christmas recording of "The Frost Report".  Thanks to Alison for posting on the goodies-l mailing list that tickets to the recording, which will be held on on Tuesday, 6 November, can be requested from http://www.sroaudiences.com/ - bookings are not yet open, but you can join the mailing list to be notified when they do become available.

Here is a description of the show from that website:

THE FROST REPORT IS BACK!

The Frost Report Is Back! is a celebration of 'The Frost Report', an evening hosted by Sir David Frost with interviews and contributions from the star performers and writers of the show, including John Cleese, Ronnie Corbett, Julie Felix, Sheila Steafel, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Dick Vosburgh, Barry Cryer, Tony Jay, Neil Shand and Eric Idle.

Now seen as one of the most important series in the development of British TV comedy, The Frost Report left no established convention un-satirised. It sowed the seeds for successive comedy shows for the next two decades as its writers and performers (John Cleese, Michael Palin, Ronnie Barker, Ronnie Corbett) went on to become, somewhat paradoxically (and perhaps in a way that was worthy of one of their own sketches), the comedy establishment themselves.

The show was able to boast some of the country's top comedy writers and performers (Anthony Jay, Keith Waterhouse, Willis Hall, Denis Nordern) both in front of and behind the camera and it gave rise to some of the entertainment world's ascending talents. Writers like John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Eric Idle would soon move in front of the camera to develop and star in series such as At Last The 1948 Show, Do Not Adjust Your Set and Monty Python's Flying Circus. Marty Feldman soon become a star in his own right with The Marty Feldman Show and two of the show's leading performers, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett formed the foundation of a long standing partnership - The Two Ronnies.

The evening will also feature new material as well as a tribute to the late Ronnie Barker.

The show will be recorded for transmission on BBC4 later this year.

Bill mentioned in another story about proposed BBC cuts
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesFrom http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/topstories/2007/10/19/furious-bbc-staff-vow-to-call-strike-vote-today-89520-19975806/:

Furious BBC staff vow to call strike vote today

By Nicola Methven, Tv Editor 19/10/2007

Angry broadcast unions have pledged to launch a strike ballot today if BBC bosses ask for voluntary redundancies to cover a £2billion funding shortfall.

The threat follows yesterday's heated management meeting with screen stars including Joanna Lumley, Lord Robert Winston, Bill Oddie and John Humphrys.

Lord Winston complained morale had hit "rock bottom" while Humphrys was unhappy at being "shot down" for trying to protest at the cuts.

But director general Mark Thompson said it had been "positive" meeting, adding: "We've got to make sure we keep as much talent as possible."

Thompson yesterday announced 2,500 job losses and a 10 per cent cut in new programmes, meaning more repeats.

He had planned to send out 3,000 letters today asking for volunteers to quit.

Gerry Morrissey, of union Bectu, said: "He agreed on the principle of retraining and redeployment but that is meaningless if they start calling for volunteers."

Thousands of journalists and technical staff are set to vote on the walkout, which would take live programmes off the air.

name the Martin Mere beavers, win Bill's autograph
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesThe following article comes from http://www.champnews.com/html/newsstory.asp?id=6159.  It mentions Autumnwatch, which returns to BBC Two on November 5th - the show's official page at http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/animals/wildbritain/autumnwatch/ tells how UK residents can participate in the Autumnwatch survey.

Thursday, October 18, 2007

Name our famous beavers

ChampNews readers are being given the exclusive chance to name Martin Mere wildfowl centre's two adult beavers.

The rodents, who were brought to the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust site in July, will be featured in the BBC2 series Autumnwatch that will be based at Martin Mere.

Presenters Bill Oddie and Kate Humble will give daily, sunrise-to-sunset reports from the mere for two weeks, starting on Monday November 5.

"This competition is very unique as we the only location in the North West that has a beaver exhibit so the winners will be the only people in the region that will have a direct association with these animals," centre manager Andy Wooldridge said.

"The beavers have been extinct in this area for 500 years but have settled in really well since releasing them in July and we are very pleased with the way they are adapting their enclosure.  This is a once in a lifetime competition and I would like to wish luck to everyone who enters."

As the beavers are new to the centre they were not featured on the series last year that was also based at the centre, off the A59.

They were captured from the wild in Germany and have two babies, called 'kits', who are 18 months old.
The youngsters will be moved to Slimbridge WWT centre in Gloucester when the adults breed again, so are not being named.

All four have been busy since they arrived at the mere.  They have dug a 5ft channel connecting the two ponds in their pen, felled several trees and dug at least two burrows, complete with chambers for sleeping, eating and drying off.

The winners whose names are chosen for the beavers, and a guest, will be invited to a special evening to see the beavers and be given a cuddly beaver toy and a book signed by Bill and Kate.

Send your entries to: Beaver competition, Editorial Dept, Champion Newspapers, 166 Lord Street, Southport PR9 0QA.
Please include your name, address and a daytime phone number.  Deadline is Friday, October 26.

Graeme in Feb 2008 Doctor Who CD / BBC cuts affect Bill?
more from same (The Goodies)
The Goodies* Graeme will be part of the guest cast in a new Big Finish Doctor Who CD to be released in February 2008 entitled "Max Warp".

* Articles are starting to appear about the cuts being made at the BBC over the next few years to make up for budget shortfalls.  At least two articles so far say the "Wild strand" will be dropped; it is noted (see excepts below) that this included Bill Oddie's shows "Wild in Your Country" and "Wild in Your Garden".  "Wild in Your Garden" evolved into "Springwatch"; it's unclear to me whether that show is affected as well (if anyone has further information about that please let us know).

From the Digital Spy: The BBC's factual department will be overhauled, with the creation of a single studio in London and a greater emphasis on making more programmes based outside the capital. Under a plan to make "fewer but better" shows, "middle-weight" strands such as Bill Oddie's natural history series Wild will be dropped in favour of landmark shows such as the Discovery co-production Planet Earth and Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain.

From The Guardian: "Speaking at a press conference today at Television Centre in west London, the BBC Vision director, Jana Bennett, said that natural history strand Wild is being dropped as part of an overall reduction in the amount of "middle-weight" factual programmes. Made by the BBC natural history unit, the Wild strand has included Wild in Your Country and Wild in Your Garden - both fronted by Bill Oddie.

Tim & Frost, together again
more from same (British Comedy)
British ComedyAccording to a column in the October 16th issue of The Daily Mail, Tim Brooke-Taylor will be appearing in a special Christmas edition of The Frost Report.

Here's the article:

Frost needs a new Ronnie

Sir David Frost is looking for someone to replace the late Ronnie Barker to recreate the classic Sixties sketch where toff John Cleese looks down on middle-class Barker, who in turn looks down on working-class Ronnie Corbett.

Both Cleese and Corbett have been lined up for a special Christmas edition of The Frost Report, where the sketch originally aired, to mark the 40th anniversary of the show winning the Golden Rose of Montreux.

Frost tells me: "We are rounding up all the old gang including Corbett, Cleese, Michael Palin and Tim Brooke-Taylor. But some of the original team, like Marty Feldman and Peter Cook, are no longer with us."

It is perhaps just as well Cook will be absent. He famously described his one regret in life as saving Frost from drowning.
