There will be a special edition of the Clarion & Globe with all of the news that's fit to print (and quite a bit that isn't!) from "The Goodies Still Rule OK" tour of the U.K., which starts in **just two days time!** The UK Tour C&G will be published in late April shortly after the conclusion of Tim and Graeme's tour and will include all of the "spotteds" such as media reports, interviews, critic reviews etc. What we would really like to include though is reviews and comments from any of our UK-based club members who are lucky enough to be able to attend one the shows in person. GROKIN' ALL OVER THE WORLD

Thanks to the internet, The Goodies Rule - OK! Fan Club has over 4,200 members around the world (not to mention staff on three different continents!). While the largest concentrations of our members are in Australia, the UK, and the US we can proudly claim members in over 70 countries as well as visitors from even more locales around the world.

GOODIES PHOTO GALLERIES ON WEBSITE

After many hours slaving away outside the five mile limit during the past three weeks, I've finally completed the addition of a Goodies Gallery to each of my Episode Summaries in the Articles section of the website: http://www.goodiesruleok.com/articles.php .
Each gallery contains between 4 and 20 photos from that particular episode, so there are around 800 pictures in total. Although many of the photos aren't of crystal clear visual quality (particularly the Series 9 episodes), the galleries hopefully complement the written summaries and provide some additional appreciation of the wonderful comedy found in every Goodies episode.
For the benefit of those who have already viewed the galleries since I first posted news of the updates on the website earlier this month, the galleries for "Scoutrageous", "The Goodies And The Beanstalk" and "Montreux '72 Kitten Kong" have all had new photos added to them in the past few days, particularly "Kitten Kong" which now has 20 photos in total.

Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden brought their highly successful Goodies Live show to the 2006 Edinburgh Fringe festival and Paramount Brighton Comedy Festival. More fans will finally have a chance to see the show during the next five weeks when "The Goodies Still Rule OK!" tour plays another 23 dates in the UK.
Tim & Graeme will appear live; Bill will participate via the wonders of video (due to filming commitments for his various nature shows).

JUST WHAT MAKES THE GOODIES SO GOOD

Just what makes The Goodies so good?
A mixture of The Goons and Monty Python humor laced with madcap stunts from silent movie greats like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
"It's a show for all grown-up kids and adults who aren't so grown up.", Goodies producer Bob Spiers said. "I'm always amazed that millions of kids go out of their way to watch The Goodies, because it's really a show for adults."
"The scripts are quite risque, particularly in the latest series. We have had a field day with the royal family, apartheid, and violence on the football terraces which we expect to stir up quite a bit of controversy." Spiers revealed.
The crazy trio - Tim Brooke-Taylor with his English public schoolboy looks, Graeme Garden behind those specs as the scientific whiz-kid and Bill Oddie, the token rebel non-conformist - have survived for more than 10 years.
In fact, they are more popular than ever.
"I guess their secret formula for success is that they get away with murder. Adults who think they are adults but are really kids at heart see them as they would love to be sometimes - daredevils game enough to try anything for the price" Spiers said.
"Kids see them as they would like adults to be. Imagine having The Goodies in charge of your school?"
"They live in a world of the absurd and in these days of terrorism and mayhem we need to laugh at ourselves as much as we can."
Although The Goodies recently switched from the BBC to London Weekend Television, the format will not change.
In the new series there's a new companion for the mad trio - a little robot called appropriately "Robot". One episode is all about Robot giving birth to another robot that develops into a delinquent robot. Work that one out.
"We had a lot of fun making that. I think a lot of fans don't realise the tremendous amount of work Tim, Graeme and Bill put into writing the scripts before we add the stunts." Spiers said.
"Tim's a perfectionist and will work on a script until he thinks it is perfect. There are no midway standards."
The Goodies product takes months of painstaking work from the script through to the filming and editing.
"We all work as a team and I think that's why The Goodies have remained at the top." Spiers said. He thinks the latest scripts are the best so far.
"We have three more episodes to make to finish the series. It's got to the stage where fans can't get enough."

Network is delighted to announce the first ever DVD release of the acclaimed comedy trio's complete output for ITV between 1981 and 1982 following their deflection to ITV. WHITE STRIPES AND BLACK PUDDINGS

Here's the weird news story for the day. According to various articles popping up on the web, the White Stripes new album is to be entitled Icky Thump. Multiple articles are claiming this is a reference to The Goodies' Ecky Thump (thanks to Steve Hughes for sending along a link).

It's sometimes hard to tell when the White Stripes are messing with your head. So when the candy-striped duo announced Wednesday on their Web site that the follow-up to 2005's Get Behind Me Satan is done and will be called Icky Thump, you'll forgive us if we were a bit skeptical....[From] what we can tell, "Icky Thump" is the name of a BattleBots team from Iowa, but the more U.K.-friendly spelling "Ecky Thump" is a bastardization of the word "eck" or "heck" and it's a way of saying "what the hell?" Which makes a bit more sense.
While it doesn't appear to be a Nine Inch Nails-style cryptic reference to some global conspiracy (see "Weird Web Trail: Conspiracy Theory – Or Marketing For Nine Inch Nails LP?"), a Web search for "ecky thump" also pulled up an episode of the British comedy "The Goodies" from 1975 called "Kung Fu Kapers" - alternately known as the "Ecky-Thump" episode - in which one of the lead characters, Bill, is revealed to be a master of a heretofore unknown Lancashire, England, martial-arts style known as, you guessed it, the "Ecky-Thump," in which unsuspecting saps are hit with black pudding.
The Stripes copped to the "Kapers" lift in the posting, saying, "though some residents of Northern England might almost recognize the title, The Stripes stress they are spelling it wrong intentionally just for 'kicks' and 'metaphors.' "

What's even worse, he only has 406 friends (as of this writing) while Rolf Harris, ROLF HARRIS, has 2,864! I know this because he is one of Bill's friends. So am I now. Well, phew!
I say that Bill needs more friends than 406. He at least deserves as many as Rolf, eh?

ISIRTA CD RELEASE

February 5th brought the long awaited CD debut of "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again". As many Goodies fans know, ISIRTA was a long-running radio sketch comedy show featuring Tim Brooke-Taylor, John Cleese, Graeme Garden, David Hatch, Jo Kendall, and Bill Oddie. Graeme and Bill were the primary scriptwriters for most of the show's 1963-1973 run; Bill wrote and performed almost all the humorous songs that appeared in each episode.
Fifteen episodes had previously been released on cassette between 1989-1997 by BBC Audiobooks, with those original four volumes being re-released with new covers in 2001.* These episodes, including the very first ISIRTA broadcast and the 25th Anniversary Special from 1989, have been rearranged into chronological order for their CD debut as "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again Volumes 1-4". This 8 disk set consists of four individual double CD sets packaged in a cardboard box. The 4 volumes and the outer box are all nicely illustrated with publicity photos from the series (unlike the 2001 cassette reissues, which used what I think of as the "floating heads" design). Sold separately, but with complimentary artwork, is "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again Volume 5", a 2 CD set containing four episodes being released for the first time.

While I'm no audiophile, I immediately noticed the improvement in listening to the episodes on CD compared to my well-worn cassettes. This was particularly true for softer dialog, especially little jokes and comments that were spoken further from the microphone. I actually heard a few things, or at least heard them clearly, for the first time! The convenience of having the shows on CD, with 10 chapters per show, also made it easier to replay favorite sketches and songs.
All five volumes come with inserts detailing the episode numbers, recording dates, and broadcast dates. Episode titles are not given, due to the fact the shows don't have official titles.
Those of you who use Roger Wilmut's excellent "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again Research Notes" (http://www.rfwilmut.clara.net/research/notes.html ) as an episode guide should note that the CD episode details are based on the BBC's official numbering system, which considers the initial three-episode run to be series 1. Since Wilmut calls that the "preparatory series" you'll need to subtract one from the CD series numbers to match up the two guides. Obviously the broadcast and recording dates are the same in both places.
Those of you who are new to ISIRTA will delight in discovering many songs and ideas that later found their way into Goodies episodes or albums. For example, you'll hear some familiar mock commercials, a pre-Goodies version of "Sick Man's Blues", and "Cactus in My Y-Fronts" with Bill on lead vocal.
As an "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again" fan I'm delighted to finally have these episodes on CD. Let's hope further volumes follow in short order!
In the UK the ISIRTA CDs are available from most major bookshops and other BBC Audiobooks dealers (such as major retailers like HMV and Virgin Megastores). For those outside the UK, the titles can be obtained from various online retailers such as www.amazon.co.uk , www.play.com , and www.bbcshop.com . They are also available to purchase as a download from digital retailers such as Audible, Audioville, iTunes, Mediabay, 7 Digital, Simply Audiobooks, Spoken Network, TuneTribe, Plays on the Net and Wippit. In addition, Jane Donnelly (aka cscamp) has learned from BBC Worldwide that "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again Volumes 1-4" is scheduled for release in Australia by ABC Audio in June; it will be available through ABC Shops and Centres or stores can order it in through Allen & Unwin.

I'm trying to encourage the ABC shops to stock the new release of ISIRTA (not to mention ISIHAC) I sent an email to BBC Audio books a few weeks ago. BBC Worldwide contacted me with this reply:

The catalogue from BBC Audiobooks is distributed in Australia by ABC Audio.
Although several volumes from both series have been available here previously on audiocassette nothing is available at the moment on CD.

BBC gives them a Clue
Radio show to tour after dispute settled
The team behind I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue will now go on tour - after the BBC relented about the use of the name.
Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Barry Cryer and Humphrey Lyttelton had been told they couldn't perform the tour commercially because the corporation owned the rights.
However, after Cryer spoke out about his disappointment, the corporation has now struck a deal to allow the show on the road.
A Radio 4 spokesman said: 'We're pleased to confirm that the I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue team are able to go on tour under the banner of the Clue name.
'We have been talking about how to make this happen for some time and are delighted at the positive result.'
Cryer had accused the corporation of being 'bloody stingy' about the proposed tour.
The few radio recordings each year are an instant sell-out - and the team can now expect to sell thousands of tickets to live shows.

Obviously it is *much* too soon for there to be any specific dates. However, I'm sure the club will be sent the information when the tour is booked.

The show describes itself as "the new panel game where four comedians tell lies and compete against each other to see how many unlikely truths they can smuggle past their opponents". The recordings each start at 7.30pm, with admission to the building at 6.15pm, and to the theatre from 7pm. The recordings should be over by 9.30pm at the latest. The Shaw Theatre is situated at 100-110 Euston Road, London NW1 2AJ - the nearest underground stations are Euston or King's Cross.
"The Unbelievable Truth" will be broadcast in the same slot as "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" and "Just A Minute" (Mondays at 1830, repeated Sundays at 1202) from the 23rd April.
