The August poll ended up being one of the most clear-cut results in history, with the Rolf option not even getting a look-in (just as it should be too!) The decision by ABC TV to repeat The Goodies for the first time in many years has been a clear votewinner in the GROK electorate without any need to go to preferences or offer bribes, er deals, to supposed independents.

Denis: The beginnings of Ecky Thump

THE Observer crossword provided me with a chuckle or two this week and a pause for thought.
Not that I was doing the crossword. My neighbour John Murray did it and found the answer to one of the clues was Ecky Thump.
"I couldn't believe it was a real name," he said. "So I Googled it."
And he found an entry in the "uncylopaedia wikia" that explained it was an ancient martial art that originated in Lancashire.
"Similar but superior to Kung Fu in many respects, it utilises long, fierce-looking black puddings in place of more inferior Eastern weaponry. Practitioners of the martial art are easily distinguished through their ritualistic flat caps and accompanying whippets."
Ah yes, I remember it well.
They trace its origins to the 17th century and say it may well have developed alongside the related martial art form of Ken Do'dd.
"Ecky-Thump is an exercise in spiritual cleansing, moral purity, and beating the unholy hell out of the enemy by the deadly wielding of a blood-filled intestine. And unlike the haggis wielding Scotsman, it is achieved without wearing a dress."
Grand Master Bill Oddie first revealed Ecky Thump as a martial art to a wider world in 1975.
Oddie, along with Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden, featured the deadly skills of black pudding fighting in a memorable episode of The Goodies.
Just to illustrate the type of humour they indulged in, other shows in the series included Kitten Kong and It Might As Well Be String.
Ecky Thump was so popular that one viewer actually died laughing.
Ecky Thump, of course, is also an expression of surprise or shock, which, I suppose, you would be quite likely to utter, if you were ever beaten over the head with a black pudding.
And while I was still laughing at the memories, I had that pause for thought.
Why haven't The Goodies been re-run on TV?
GOODIES PICNIC GET-TOGETHER IN MELBOURNE

I am hosting a fan picnic on Sunday November 21 at the Catani Gardens in St. Kilda (Melbourne, Australia). Anyone wishing to attend should meet us at 1pm with nibblies to share, picnic blankets and games/activities for the afternoon (games are being discussed in the 'Get together' thread of the forum). Costumes are encouraged but optional. Bring any Goodies-related items you can carry and enjoy a fun and relaxing afternoon in the (fingers crossed) sun!
(An alternative location will be announced on the forum in case of bad weather.)

CELEBRITY AUCTION
(Lisa Manekofsky)
The producers of BBC2's "Cash in the Celebrity Attic" (a show in which celebrities auction off their old possessions to raise money for charity) have passed along the following information:
"We will be filming with Bill Oddie of 'The Goodies' fame on the 11th September. Bill will be auctioning off 'Goodies' memorabilia for charity including vinyl's, original 'The Goodies' scripts and VHS original copies of 'The Goodies' series. The Auction will take place in Tring, England. I am sure Bill would be happy to sign any items bought through auction."
The Auction will start at 9:30am on Saturday 11th September.

Celebrity's items go under the hammer

TV star Bill Oddie will be the celebrity guest as an auction rooms hosts Cash in the Celebrity Attic.
Tring Market Auctions in Brook Street will be home to exciting items for the sixth series of the BBC programme.
Mr Oddie will be selling some of his own artwork, including a painting of a lapwing and some sketches.
The celebrity, who rose to fame in British comedy series The Goodies, which he created, has searched his home for memorabilia from the show to auction.
The items include an original shooting script with a storyboard and music script, a selection of original VHS viewing copies and a large collection of The Goodies vinyl.
He will also sell a collection of ornithology and natural history books among other items and money he raises will be given to his favourite charity, the International Primate Protection League.
The star will also be joined by presenter Angela Rippon and antiques expert John Cameron.
Tring Market Auctions managing director Stephen Hearn said: "We are delighted to have Cash in the Attic back.
"It will be an exciting day with some rare and collectable items on offer."
Viewing is on Friday from 9.30am-6pm and from 8.30am on Saturday before the sale at 9.30am.
