July is a popular month for Goodies birthday celebrations, with Bill turning 68 on the 7th and Tim turning 69 on the 17th. Very best wishes for a Happy Birthday, Bill and Tim, from all of your fans at GROK!

Last month's three-cornered polling contest was billed as a heavyweight contest but Dougal was knocked out inside the first round and Kitten Kong put up a good fight but ultimately lost in a unanimous points decision. It seems as though Dougal and Kitten Kong would be wasting their time scrapping with each other and should pool their resources ("You're not pooling mine!") to ward off the ever-present threat of another Rolf Harris plague.

Director, World's Funniest Island

It doesn't seem like four years since we managed to get Tim, Graeme and Bill to put together their Australian touring show. It is! But hey they're coming back...Well Tim and Graeme are, with bits of Bill on screen.

They're coming to Sydney especially for the World's Funniest Island...the new comedy festival we are presenting on Cockatoo Island. You can find out all about the island and full festival details at: www.worldsfunniestisland.com

Islands are funny places. They are also mystical, magical and sometimes dangerous....ask Shakespeare and Gilligan!

It was a big day for us more than two years ago when we went to Cockatoo Island for the first time.

We had been trying to find a home for a new kind of comedy festival We needed to find a great place to hang out with a whole bunch of buildings we could turn into venues for one big comedy party weekend.

It's a simple idea...One ticket with ferry rides included and around 200 performances over the weekend. It's a big binge for comedy lovers.

Just like the big music festivals we will be making progressive announcements about our talent. We will be announcing more in August and September,

As well as Tim and Graeme I would like to touch on some themes and ideas we have run with......

First, the Young Guns ...In comedy one of the great moment is seeing a new performer who makes your hair stand on end. We have selected some of the hottest young comics in Australia...

Like Jacques Barrett; he's not on TV, but he is at the cutting edge of today's rising stars.

Like Josh Thomas. He is 22 and being watched each week by one and a half million people on Talkin Bout My Generation...

You should also watch out for Tom Ballard. He's on Triple J on the weekends

You won't want to miss Claire Hooper from Good News Week or Daniel Townes who is already spending more time onstage in London than Australia.

And Felicity Ward from The Ronnie John's show is making her mark brilliantly as a solo performer and guesting around the panel show.

And the young guns of comedy are alive and well on Sydney campuses. We have picked some of the best student revue groups of the past year or two and given them their own venue. Wall to wall sketch shows day and night.

Student revues have been the birthplace of some of the greatest comedians, including Rod Quantock, a home grown legend and Heath Franklin's Chopper came out of Sydney student comedy....

Of course the Cambridge Footlights has given us many legends including The Goodies....

Tim and Graeme are doing four shows, casual, fun and definitely no pyrotechnics! Their shows are hosted by another performer who came out of student comedy; The Chaser's Andrew Hansen. The shows will be in our premier indoor venue The Big Top on both days of the festival. It is wonderful to hear from other performers how much they love The Goodies. I reckon you will be seeing all the stars grabbing seats in the big top to see Tim and Graeme between their own shows.

On the theme of legends, Alexei Sayle, the fat bastard himself, is back onstage for the first time in eight years. He still rates the number 18 spot on Britain's all time funniest list. He changed British comedy forever and was central to the alternative comedy scene of the 80's which gave us The Comic Strip and the Young Ones and much more. Julian Morrow, from The Chaser will be hosting one of Alexei's performances.

Another word we like is Diversity...As an illustration of our search for diversity we have one of the most notable new directions in world comedy... US comics Azhar Usman, Mohammed Amer and Preacher Moss in their show Allah Made Me Funny. .They just played the massive Hammersmith Apollo Theatre in London. We have also invited Pakistan's only English speaking stand up comic...Sammi Shah.

A left field inclusion is Jane Bussmann. We met her when she wrote a story about The Goodies during Tim and Graeme's Edinburgh festival appearances. She is an award winning journalist...She writes for South Park... She has been a voice on Family Guy and she has a remarkable live show called Bussmann's Holiday..The Worst Date Ever. Comedy that moves from Hollywood celebrity gossip to the war zone in Uganda. It's true, it's funny and its disturbing. Great comedy.

'I'd also like to mention the very very silly category...Watch out for the Erotic Fan Fiction show...filthy literary fun not to be missed and Bitchin Kitchen...comics versus chefs in a wildly funny send up of those TV cooking shows and Dr Sketchy's Anti Art Class....you can join a burlesque drawing class for an hour or so...really.

So.. some Legends, some Young Guns some seriously silly stuff plus our favourite top Australian comics of all ages...Fiona O'Loughlin, Tommy Dean, Wendy Harmer, the old danger man himself Austen Tayshus. Tripod and Jimeoin. Akmal and Chris Franklin Six Quick Chicks...the Sydney comedy burlesque team hosted by Christa Hughes, Sam Simmons George Smilovici, Sam Bowring Jackie Loeb....

We will be announcing more artists in August and September.

Cockatoo Island is about to host a weekend of wall-to-wall laughs, writes Elissa Blake.

An ambitious new comedy festival is aiming to turn Cockatoo Island into an annual laugh extravaganza. It plans to feature dozens of local and international acts ranging from burlesque, street theatre and student reviews to renowned comics, a controversial musical and even a clever remake of Mad Max with overdubs.

"This is a festival for a city with attention deficit disorder," cackles John Pinder, director of World's Funniest Island, the "world's first all-day, all-evening comedy festival", which takes over the Sydney Harbour venue on October 17-18.

"We know Sydney is a city that wants things to happen right now and be over by Monday morning. So this will be like a rock festival, only full of hilarious comedy."

World's Funniest Island will feature more than 200 international and local comedians performing in 18 venues over two days. One of the headline acts will be legendary British comedian, actor and author Alexei Sayle, best known as the students' landlord in The Young Ones, for the spoken word hit 'Ullo John! Got A New Motor? and a minor yet memorable role in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.

"Alexei Sayle is one of a pantheon of great British comedians," Pinder says. "They had a little show in a London strip club and Alexei would host the

show saying, 'Hello I'm an alternative comedian and I'm non-racist, non-sexist and not f---ing funny!' Then he'd have a string of jokes that are totally unprintable," Pinder says.

Sayle will perform two shows at the World's Funniest Island. One is based on excerpts from a selection of the comic novels he's written over the past decade. The other will be an "Evening With Alexei Sayle", with anecdotes from his time with The Young Ones and the Comic Strip Club. "He's older and balder now but still incredibly funny," Pinder says.

Some of the other early acts announced include British comedy legends The Goodies' Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden in a show hosted by The Chaser's Andrew Hansen, stand-up comics Wil Anderson and Fiona O'Loughlin and radio stars Merrick and Rosso.

The controversial new comic musical Beaconsfield: The Musical, a hit of the Melbourne Comedy Festival, is also part of the line-up. Other musical acts include the

a capella choir Spooky Men's Chorale and Die Roten Punkte, an outrageous - allegedly German - rock act. There will also be a whole venue dedicated to all-day student revue-style comedy sponsored by the University of Sydney.

At the end of each night, Mad Max The Remix, a crazy one-hour comic cut-up of all three Mad Max films by performer Eddie Sharp, will screen with overdubs by a team of live actors. The story follows Max, the greatest dancer of all time, on his quest to join Miss Tina's prestigious Bartertown Dance academy.

More headline acts will be announced on July 14 when the website goes live (worldsfunniest island.com) with more to be announced in the coming weeks.

Cockatoo Island, which has already played host to the Biennale of Sydney and the Nick Cave-curated music festival, All Tomorrow's Parties, will be crawling with street performers, musicians and stand-up comics during the two-day festival. There will be more than 60 market stalls, 20 food outlets and 15 bars. The festival is an all-ages event with children under five allowed in free with an adult, there will be over-18 wristbands to purchase alcohol and some shows will be adults only.

Ferries will run in three shifts in the morning and late at night with punters being asked to nominate their preferred departure time (from Circular Quay or King Street Wharf) at the time of ticket purchase.

"If you come early there will be a breakfast gala showcasing a potpourri of performers that you can choose to see again later in the day," Pinder says. "Then there will be a big bang of headline acts around midday and peak shows mid-evening. Everyone will be out by 1am at the latest and they can come back the next day and do it all over again."

A group claiming to be not a comedy act is riotous Die Roten Punkte. Brother and sister Otto and Astrid have been stunning audiences throughout the world with their high-energy Ramones-meets-the Cure tomfoolery. "Our manager keeps

booking us into comedy festivals but ve are real rock and roll," Otto insists in his flamboyantly German-accented English. "Sometimes ze people are laughing but ve don't mind. Ve are playing at ze end of both nights unt ve just vant people to rock out, ja!"

WORLD'S FUNNIEST ISLAND

The last time British comedy trio the Goodies played in Australia, in 2005, they played to 15,000 people in Sydney alone. The tour of their first live stage show was only supposed to run to a handful of gigs but no one anticipated the nostalgic pull of the sitcom-sketch show. "When we got talked into doing the live show by [promoter] John Pinder, we figured one week! We ended up doing 60 shows. We will never forgive him for making us work so hard," Tim Brooke-Taylor remembers. This time around, Bill Oddie will join Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden (via satellite) for four performances in the Big Top, an hour of "reminiscences and funny bits" hosted by the Chaser's Andrew Hansen, a "total Goodies nut".

The three British comedians met at Cambridge University where they performed in the Footlights Club. They went on to perform in a number of radio and TV comedy shows before creating The Goodies in 1970, a mix of slapstick, surreal gags, situation comedy and camera tricks. The series ran to 78 episodes and has been aired continuously in Australia for almost 40 years. "They're all great raconteurs. Goodies nuts will just want to be in the same room as them - they're like gurus," John Pinder says.

GOODIES JACKET FOR AUCTION

Sorry for the short notice, but I've only just learned about this.

Tomorrow Bonham's in Knightsbridge, England will be holding an auction of Entertainment Memorabilia including garments from films and TV shows which are currently owned by Angels the Costumiers. Knowing that Angels obtained a jacket from "The Goodies Almost Live" episode about a year ago I checked the auction listing - sure enough, the jacket is in the auction (as part of Lot 66). The specific item is the jacket Tim wore during the performance for "Please Let Us Play" (as seen in the first photo at the bottom of this page: http://www.goodiesruleok.com/articles.php?id=63&page=7

Hopefully the jacket will go to a Goodies fan!

R.I.P. MOLLIE SUGDEN

Goodies guest star Mollie Sugden (and star of "Are You Being Served?") has passed away. Sugden appeared as the Minister For Trade & Domestic Affairs in the series 1 Goodies episode "Playgirl Club" (aka "Caught In The Act") in 1970.

There's a funny bit during the DVD commentary for "Kitten Kong", when Graeme's character has discovered Twinkle is missing and yells "What have you done with my pussy?!!". On the commentary track you can hear the present day Goodies saying something like "ooh, Mrs. Slocombe!" ;)

(I should mention that "Kitten Kong" predated "Are You Being Served?" so it wasn't an intentional reference.)

GOODIES TARGETS – DAVID FROST

Sir David Paradine Frost was born in Kent in 1939 and attended Cambridge shortly before the three Goodies did. Like the Goodies, he was involved with the Footlights Drama Society at Cambridge, serving as the Secretary in his final year. After graduating, Frost was chosen to host a pioneering satirical show titled "That Was The Week That Was", and one of the comedy writers that he signed up in 1964 was a young Bill Oddie, who had just returned from the Footlights' "Cambridge Circus" tour of the U.S.

"The Frost Report" from 1966 and 1967 was an important launching pad for the television careers of the likes of John Cleese and the Two Ronnies, and Frost's scriptwriting team included two future Goodies – Bill and Tim – plus Graham Chapman, Marty Feldman and various other budding comedians.

Frost would go on to host many other TV programs in Britain and America, including his self-titled "The David Frost Show", but he is perhaps best known for his probing interviews of U.S. Presidents, most notably Richard Nixon. His present media commitment is a weekly current affairs show titled "Frost Over the World" on the Al Jazeera English channel

As a prominent TV and media figure during the 1970s, he was ripe for the picking as a target for The Goodies, but their stirring of him was always done with a measure of fondness as he had given both Bill and Tim early opportunities to show their own comedy wares. As Tim mentions in a past interview for the Goodies Clarion & Globe newsletter, "David Frost gave me my first break. He backed At Last The 1948 Show. John Cleese and I were editors (smart word for researchers) of his live chat show in the mid sixties. They were brilliant. But it gave me an ulcer. We made fun of his self importance but we liked him. Still do."

The swipes at Frost first appear on the Goodies' agenda in the second series of the show, where he scores a mention in three separate episodes, and then periodically throughout the remaining series. In Pollution, Tim is extremely annoyed by the Ministry Of Pollution creating such a terrible mess of the environment so that they can then profit by cleaning it up again, and he picks up the phone, grumbling: "I'm going to make a complaint to the very highest authority." Graeme (shocked): "Not ..." Bill (also shocked): "... David Frost!" T (taken aback): "No, not that high ... no ... no ...!" He ends up phoning the considerably lower authority of the Prime Minister instead!

In Antiques, Tim is launching into one of his patriotic speeches because a group of rich American art dealers have had the temerity to bid astronomical prices ("One million billion trillion quintillion zillion pounds!") to snap up a historic British artwork at Sotheby's auction house. The fact that the portrait's artist Velasquez is actually Spanish is lost on Tim as he castigates the Americans: "Too many times you've taken too much from us. London Bridge ... the Queen Mary ... Julie Andrews and David Frost. And we're grateful!" But not so grateful that they're plundering the country's art treasures, it seems.

The Goodies are running a 'Nice Person Of The Year Award' in Double Trouble, with themselves in the running against people like Liberace, Tony Blackburn, Moira Anderson, Lovelace Watkins, Hughie Green ("a bunch of creeps", according to Bill) and the unknown Dr Petal. The phone rings and Tim answers: "Hello. No, it's not too late to enter. You wish to nominate a contestant? Certainly. Could I have your name please? David what? Frist, yes. No, Frost … David Frost! (T gasps in mock amazement while B looks disgusted) And who do you wish to nominate? David Frost … that's right, yes it is super, isn't it? Yes and you're a very wonderful human being too! Yes. Byeee!" (hangs up with a disdainful look) G (gleefully setting the winning odds): David Frost! A million to one! T: "No, two million!" (with B nodding in agreement)

That Old Black Magic sees a corrupted Graeme performing some awful magic tricks in his hideout at Clapham Common, with Tim and Bill (disguised as virgins) trembling at the thought of being offered as sacrifices when Graeme ultimately summons up the devil. Following Graeme's incantation of "Appear to us, lord of darkness, leader of lost souls, all powerful one!", Bill shrieks "No, not him!!" and Graeme's assistant opens a curtain to reveal a stage with a talk show setting of comfy-looking chairs and a table with microphones on it. As Graeme roars "See he approaches!" a Satan-like image looms at the back of stage spouting a characteristic greeting of "Hello, good evening and welcome." to the theme music of Frost's TV show. Bill and Tim scream in terror before Witch Hazel intervenes and pits her good magic against Graeme's evil, exploding the stage set and successfully sending Frost packing with an apologetic squeak from him of "Sorry about that. Got to go now. Back in a trice. Byeee!"

In Clown Virus, the Goodies are summoned to a nearby US military base and while waiting for Major Charles M. Cheeseburger to show up, they are astonished by the arsenal of various germ warfare missiles and nerve gas canisters that they find inside Command HQ. As well as the run-of-the-mill tear gas and laughing gas, they find stocks of Clap Gas. G (holding up a can): "Spray the enemy with this and no matter what appalling horrors he's faced with, he bursts into applause." T (disbelievingly): "Oh rubbish!" (G sprays T & B and they start clapping) B: "Good heavens, that's extremely useful. (looks at the desk) And there's a very big order here ... from David Frost!", which causes Graeme to have a chuckle as well.

The initial sequence of Scatty Safari features a tour of the Goodies Star Safari Park with a bunch of tourists madly clicking cameras at the various exhibits on show. This includes a candlestick-carrying Liberace being hunted down and tackled heavily to the ground by a pack of journalists including David Frost and Michael Parkinson, who have "got the scent of a celebrity."

The episode Scoutrageous has Lone Scout Graeme and his partner-in-crime Bill desperate to get hold of the one last scouting badge that still eludes them - the World Domination badge. As Graeme explains to Bill, this particular badge is very rare and hard to obtain: "There's only three people that have those. That was Alexander The Great, Julius Caesar and David Frost. Mind you, Frosty pinched his!"

One of the two opening ads for Graeme's new advertising business in Politics sees a gentleman wearing a long trenchcoat asking for help from a female ticketing officer to the reply of "I'm sorry Mr Frost, I really don't think I can.". He then flashes her and, rather impressed, she remarks "Oh, that'll do nicely" and credits his 'American Excess' card!. Later in this episode during the election coverage, guest presenter David Dimblemblm tells us: "As this is the first ever general election to have been nominated for a film and television Academy Award, we'll be going over for comments from Tony Hatch, Tommy Trinder and Mickey Most (shown sitting at a table in the studio). And we've got David Frost all the way over there in New York … so with any luck we shan't be hearing from him!"

Frost's final Goodies send-up comes in the BBC episode Animals where Bill, as a representative of the Freedom Of Vegetables League, appears on the Rabid Frost Programme, which is hosted by a black Labrador dog. Rabid's other guest is a rabbit, which is the leader of the Animal Revolutionary Party, and when Bill (who has already upset animal members of the studio audience by thanking Rabid for the opportunity of "eating your guest ... er, meeting your guest, sorry, sorry!") ends up making rabbit stew out of the leader while explaining that he sees the whole country as "one great big melting pot", all hell breaks loose.

In the dog-eats-dog world of satirical comedy and given the degree of verbal battering that the Goodies inflict on their other targets like Nicholas Parsons, Rolf Harris and Max Bygraves (not much!) for instance, Frost actually gets off pretty lightly despite their jibes at him still being quite amusing and an enjoyable feature of the show. It's a pity that he never actually appeared in person as a guest on The Goodies at some stage given his own very impressive comedy and entertainment background.
