Life has been far from easy – or indeed funny – for the short third of the Goodies, now presenting wildlife shows on British television. Oddie grew up hardly knowing his bipolar mother, whose violent episodes led her to be confined in a mental institution. And he has been in hospital three times for clinical depression. But the Goodies still dominate and although the "Bill Oddie interviews Bill Oddie" writing technique is irritating beyond measure, what he has to say is fascinating.

* Bill Oddie will be attending the Bridport Literary Festival on Saturday, November 15; he will be reading from his recently published autobiography, "One Flew Into the Cuckoo's Egg".
The excerpt regarding Bills appearance reads:
A late arrival to the festival's impressive roster of speakers is everyone's favourite naturalist and Goodie, Bill Oddie.
He will be at Bridport Arts centre at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 15 and will be reading from his recent autobiography, One Flew Into the Cuckoo's Egg.
"We all love Bill Oddie as a Goodie and as the thinking man's naturalist, and we are very lucky to have him at the festival," said Tanya. "But then you see him on a programme such as Who Do You Think You Are and you find that a lot of people who appear light-hearted on the surface can have sadness and depression in their life.
"Bill's talk will be finding out about the other side of him, which I think will be fascinating."

* There is an article on news.com.au today headlined "BBC's Edward Stourton attacks Queen Mother; Bill Oddie laughs at Dead Squirrel" which features a photo of Bill peering out from behind some tree leaves with the caption "No laughing matter … TV star Bill Oddie".
But the turmoil at the BBC doesn’t stop there.
Ex-Goodie turned nature-lover Bill Oddie is also in the firing line after his family friendly documentary series Autumnwatch aired close-up images of the corpse of a squirrel.
The squirrel had been electrocuted after gnawing through a live cable connected to presenter Bill Oddie’s garden shed.
According to the Daily Mail, Mr Oddie, 67, and his co-presenter Kate Humble joked about the incident, echoing Monty Python's famous "dead parrot" sketch.
Mr Oddie was quoted as saying: "Better red than dead … or grey. Let all squirrels watching be warned, because you can get too cocky."
Ms Humble said: "So, it’s not a sleeping squirrel? It’s an ex-squirrel."
Viewers complained, saying the footage had distressed their children.
The BBC defended the documentary, saying Autumnwatch "has a duty to show nature as it is, which sometimes includes scenes of death".

GRAEME SPOTTINGS
* The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine (Issue 401, which went on sale in the UK today) includes an article about the new series of Doctor Who radio adventures. The press release says the article includes an interview with the cast, including Paul McGann, Sheridan Smith, Graeme Garden, Art Malik, Clare Buckfield and James Fleet.
Thanks for Sosia for pointing out that the first story in the series (the second series of Eighth Doctor audio adventures) starts this Sunday on BBC Radio 7. Graeme is in the second show in the series (Max Warp) while Tim appears in the sixth story (The Zygon Who Fell To Earth). Each story probably will be broken into multiple episodes; we'll have to watch for the start date of Tim's & Graeme's appearances.

Bill Dare (the producer) is defending the program and there's quite a bit of discussion about Tim buying pornography and Bill talks a bit about how this came about. 4. I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue - Live On Stage. This is a DVD of the Tour show filmed at the Lowry Centre in Salford on 6th April 2008, just ten days before Humph went into hospital. It features the regular team of Tim, Barry, Graeme and Humph with Jeremy Hardy. And Colin on the piano of course. It contains nearly 2 hours and 12 minutes of material, and is a priceless souvenir for all fans of Humph and the show. It will be published on 10th November. I am negotiating with BBC Worldwide to see if they can do a discount price for members of the mailing list. I will send further details when I have them.
Finally, many of you have asked when the BBC4 tribute to Humphrey Lyttelton is going to be repeated. BBC4 tell me that they are thinking it will be in the run-up to Christmas, but don't yet have an exact date. I will of course let you know the details of this when I have them.

THE OTHER GOODIES – HOLIDAY CHILDRESS
Note from author: This is the first of two stories about other "Goodies" groups.
When fans of British comedy hear "The Goodies," they may immediately think of Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie.
But if search the Internet or MySpace for the group, you may be surprised to find another act by the same name. Local rock music fans in Asheville, North Carolina, may not be aware of the British comedy trio, but may instead recognize the images of Holiday Childress, Patrick Kelly and Michael Allen who have performed together since the early 1990s.
Although the comedy trio only subtly influenced the name of the rock group, there are a number of coincidental similarities between the two.
Like the Goodies television show, Goodies rock concerts contain quite a bit of theatrics, comedy and storytelling. At one time early in their career, all three Goodies band members lived communally, in an abandoned Georgian warehouse. Although not exactly a disused railway station, the warehouse was next to a set of railroad tracks.
Additionally, each Goodies musician brought their own unique and distinct personalities and talents to the band, just as Brooke-Taylor, Garden and Oddie created separate identities for the comedy show.
In its initial, adolescent inceptions, lead vocalist Childress was the conservatively dressed band member, one who doted on the music of Hall & Oates. Drummer Allen displayed his idolization of Kiss with his leather pants, leather-studded belt and football cleats.
Kelly, who later joined the band as its bassist, was the practical member who had a sincere love for the musical group and a real job in a pizza parlor. This last had real value for the band, for it paid the bills and kept everyone well-fed, in exchange for bass lessons.
Yet if Childress, when he formed the band, had ever intended to mimic the comedy trio, he did so subliminally.
It was 1993 and the trio was seriously writing songs in anticipation of performing. Childress struggled to vainly to find a name for his three-piece rock band. One day, as he lay down for a nap, he hoped that his subconscious would give him some assistance. Childress promised himself that when he awoke, he would have a name.
While sleeping, Childress dreamed the band's future name as a hangman puzzle, with each letter clearly identified, but in scrambled order. When he awakened, Childress shared his dream with Kelly and told him the letters. Kelly copied them exactly as Childress dictated them and played with rearranging them.
"A few minutes later he said, 'Holiday, The Goodies?'" Childress said. "It was a Eureka moment."
The child of a United States Air Force fighter pilot stationed in England until Childress was 7 years old, Childress vaguely remembers watching the Goodies on television with his mother, who enjoyed the show.
"I remember three guys riding on a bike and it being a really fast paced comedy—sort of like The Three Stooges meets Three's Company," Childress said. "All of a sudden, I knew that was what we needed to call the band."
Childress had even changed his name from "Stephen" to "Holiday," because its connotations of rest, vacation, as well as the word's roots in the term "holy day"— better expressed him than Stephen did.
The Goodies recorded their first CD, "Greatest Hits," and released it in 1995. For the next four years, they steadily continued to perform. Although they no longer lived together in the warehouse, they had together moved to separate residences in Asheville.
Soon, Childress began to feel burned out from competing responsibilities and widening interests. Now married, he and his wife had just had a baby boy and his interests had widened. Childress needed a break from the band. Allen and Kelly moved back to Georgia.
The following year, the musical trio returned to the stage for what was supposed to be a one-time reunion. But the chemistry among them was still strong. Instead of a permanent split, they recorded two more CDs: They released "Postcard e.p." in 2001 and "the Goodies Live!" (two CDs and one DVD) in 2004.
Today, Childress, Allen and Kelly still occasionally perform as The Goodies, while pursuing individual projects. For Childress, like Oddie, it's this solo work that has stretched and developed his artistic talents, especially through performing in venues that are a bit more intellectual and sophisticated than the typical rock 'n' roll crowd.
The solo Childress is not, he said, is not another Goodies.
"The Goodies is a rock band that has a lot of energy, but when I play solo shows there is a lot of subtlety and quietness," Childress said. "Everybody is generally sitting down and I usually sit on a chair onstage, almost like storytelling. There is the sound of a cello here and the light touch of the piano there."
One song, Foie Gras, tells the story of a man who's become addicted to the pate, except that he cannot afford the lifestyle that allows him to enjoy it. By the end of the song, the man is sneaking it under a bridge.
During his performance to a spell-bound audience, Childress, while playing an acoustic guitar, alternates between narration and a high, operatic-style voice beckoning the tempting foie gras to the man. "You could have heard a pin drop," Childress said.
Last year, Childress assumed the lead role in the ballet, "The Many Deaths of Edward Gorey," although he's quick to point out that he did not dance. Rather he assumed the persona of the illustrator, while the dancers themselves brought to life each of Gorey's sketches as Childress' Gorey simultaneously conceived them.
When fabricating new material, Childress now responds to a wider variety of inspiration. At home, he experiments with accordions, a pump organ and a reel to reel machine. He's taking a new look at the roles cabaret and vaudeville play in entertainment and hopes to eventually create material for children as well.
"It's a brand-new chapter and it's very interesting and exciting to me," Childress said. "It's nice to do something on a clean slate and just kind of go for it. I haven't done that for awhile."
