2. GOODIES Q&A
**************

In the previous two editions of the C&G, we've been privileged to run a series of "Goody replies" by the legendary Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden to questions submitted by GROK fan club members.
Here is the third and final instalment, with our huge thanks to Tim and Graeme for their wonderful contributions to our newsletter and club, and also to all of the members who took the time and effort to submit interesting questions for Tim and Graeme to answer.

I KNOW THAT TIM BROOKE-TAYLOR AND BILL ODDIE WENT TO THE SAME UNIVERSITY, WERE GOOD FRIENDS AND PERFORMED COMEDY TOGETHER, BUT WHEN AND HOW DID YOU COME TO TEAM UP WITH THEM?
GRAEME: I was at Cambridge with them, but a year behind them as I am so much younger. We were all in the Footlights Club – Tim was President and I was Pres the year after him.

DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO DO SOME VERSION OF "THE GOODIES" TODAY (SUCH AS AN ANIMATION OR CARTOON)? WOULD IT BE OF INTEREST TO YOU TO DO SO?
TIM: I think it would be fun to do, but I honestly don’t think it is likely. Our only hope for anything is for the BBC to repeat the shows and then…

DO YOU KNOW IF THE GOODIES FONT WAS DESIGNED FOR THE SHOW OR WAS IT A PRE-EXISTING DESIGN?
TIM: I think it was designed for the show, but I couldn’t be certain

HAVING WATCHED THE FEATURE ON THE RESTORATION OF THE ORIGINAL EPISODES' FOOTAGE, I WONDERED IF THIS WAS THE REASON FOR THE SO-FAR UNRELEASED EPISODES; IE DO THEY NEED SUBSTANTIAL TIME/COST TO RESTORE THEM BEFORE THEY COULD BE RELEASED OR ARE THERE OTHER REASONS (MUSIC LICENSING ETC) FOR THEM REMAINING UN-ISSUED? WHAT IS THE LIKELIHOOD OF FURTHER BATCHES OF 8 DOUBLE DVDS, A BOX SET OF ALL THE BBC EPISODES, A PART-WORKS DVD/MAGAZINE SERIES OR A SERIES-BY-SERIES RELEASE?
GRAEME: We chose the shows that were good, favourites, and made a balanced selection. Network may be negotiating with the BBC soon to license material for another DVD release.

THROUGHOUT "THE GOODIES" TELEVISION SERIES IT COULD BE SAID THE CHARACTERS ADVERTISE (OR BRAND) THEIR BUSINESS THROUGH THE USE OF THINGS LIKE THE GOODIES T-SHIRTS, "I'M A GOODY" PATCHES AND THE BIG "G" ON THE OFFICE DOOR. WAS THIS YOUR IDEA OR A PRODUCT OF THE BBC DESIGN DEPARTMENT? IF IT WAS YOUR IDEA, WAS IT ALSO AN ATTEMPT TO INCREASE RECOGNITION FOR THE TV SHOW ITSELF (AT LEAST IN THE EARLY SERIES)?
TIM: We were commercially naïve and certainly didn’t produce these designs for sale. We were just trying to find an identity. The designs were ours, enhanced by the production team.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHO WOULD TAKE WHICH SEAT ON THE TRANDEM?
TIM: Well obviously the most intelligent and athletic one needed to be at the front to steer. Bill was on the back because there were, originally, no pedals for him to get caught up in.

YOUR SON JOHN IS A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN, TOURING NOW WITH THE SCISSOR SISTERS, AND WRITING A BROADWAY SCORE. AS A PARENT, CAN YOU WATCH HIS GIGS ... OR IS IT TOO NERVE-WRACKING?
GRAEME: Course I watch his gigs. Terrific fun!

TYPICALLY THE THREE GOODIES ARE LISTED ALPHABETICALLY BY LAST NAME (TIM BROOKE-TAYLOR, GRAEME GARDEN & BILL ODDIE). HOWEVER, THE LICENSING INFO ON THE GOODIES TOUR MERCHANDISE SAYS "REPRODUCED WITH THE PERMISSION OF GRAEME GARDEN, TIM BROOKE-TAYLOR AND BILL ODDIE". IS THERE A REASON FOR THE NAMES BEING IN THAT ORDER IN THIS CASE?
TIM: I hope not. But Graeme can be quite canny.

MARY IS TALLER THAN SUE WHO IS TALLER THAN BOB. ALAN IS TALLER THAN BOB. MARY AND SUE ARE SHORTER THAN ALAN. BETTY IS SHORTER THAN BOB. WHO IS THE TALLEST? AND WHAT IS THE NAME OF MARY'S COUSIN?
TIM: Rolf and Skippy

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE GOODIES SONG AND, IF SO, WHAT IS IT?
TIM: Cactus in My Y-Fronts is my favourite to sing and I’ve always enjoyed Cricklewood. I think Wild Thing is our best performance

DID YOU COME TO THE USA TO DO ANY PUBLICITY FOR "THE GOODIES" MID-1970S RUN ON PBS? IF SO, WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT THE TRIP?
TIM: Sadly we didn’t. We were asked to make a series in the States, but baulked when the contract offered was open ended on their parts.

DO YOU KNOW WHO DESIGNED THE TRANDEM DRAWING ON THE ORIGINAL GOODIES T-SHIRTS (THE ONE THAT HAS BEEN REPRODUCED BY THE FAN CLUB)?
TIM: I’m afraid not

WHAT CRAZY IMAGES GO THROUGH YOUR MINDS WHEN YOU THINK BACK TO YOUR DAYS RECORDING "THE GOODIES" TV SHOW?
TIM: Trying not to giggle, getting hurt when falling over for the umpteenth time and trying to persuade oneself that, yes that is a real giant kitten.

IN THE US AT LEAST, WHEN PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO DESCRIBE "THE GOODIES" TO SOMEONE THEY'LL OFTEN SAY "IT'S A CROSS BETWEEN MONTY PYTHON AND THE MONKEES". ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH THAT AS A SHORTHAND EXPLANATION? WOULD YOU SUGGEST SOMETHING DIFFERENT?
TIM: Actually I think that’s quite a good description – the best of both obviously.

3. BOFFO IDEAS
**************

You can make it happen here. Liven up the club with a boffo idea for bob-a-job week. E-mail <enquiries@goodiesruleok.com> with your comments, ideas or suggestions - meanwhile these are the boffo ideas which our club has been working on this month:

WEBSITE POLLS

This month's Election Night Special is brought to you from the Goodies Star Safari Park where the various celebrities have been canvassing for last-minute votes from a fascinated viewing public. Michael Aspel getting himself squashed by Kitten Kong's paw attracted a few sympathy votes, while the escaped Rolf Harrises were also popular (but thankfully not too popular, all the same!). Tony Blackburn running free then being shot almost proved to be the most popular performance, but for sheer variety of starring roles (pun fully intended!), a frequently funny Patrick Moore was a worthy winner as our favourite celebrity on The Goodies.

Many celebrities made cameo appearances on The Goodies to play themselves (or a parody of themselves). Who's your favourite?
Michael Aspel                              10 votes
Raymond Baxter                              5 votes
Tony Blackburn                             22 votes
David Dimbleby                              1 vote
Magnus Magnusson                            5 votes
Patrick Moore                              29 votes
Eddie Waring                                7 votes
Corbet Woodall                              9 votes
other                                       9 votes
sorry, no Rolf as he didn't play himself   12 votes
Total:                                    109 votes

This month's poll revisits the Goodies' moviemaking capabilities, with some interesting ideas for educational videos just begging to be made the Goodies way. So before getting too caught up with "How To Cure Sunburn, Heartburn and Tony Blackburn" or "Discover Why The Dodo Really Became Extinct", make sure that you cast your vote and say "I dodo do"! You know it makes sense.

In an episode of their TV show The Goodies make a gender education film. What other educational film should they make?
Training Champion Pantomime Horses
Creative Ways to Combat Pollution
Organizing a Three Person Music Festival
How to Clean Museum Antiquities
Identifying Dinosaurs, Inside and Out
Run Your Own Film Studio
The Perils of Mixed Dancing
The Goodies' Guide to Punk
Cream Mining for Fun & Profit
How to Care for Celebrity Park Rolfs

BILL SPOTTINGS

* Weds, 23 July - "Springwatch" on BBC 1 at 01:05 is a repeat of the "Gardens with Bill Oddie" special.
(18th Jul)

* Weds, 30 July - "Who Do You Think You Are?" on TG4 is a repeat of the episode featuring Bill.
(18th Jul)

A spotting, sort of, of Bill.
In last Sunday's Top Gear there was a race between Jeremy Clarkson in a Nissan GT-R and James May and Richard Hammond using Japanese public transport.
The Bill part comes in when Jeremy used a Bill Oddie face cutout when passing through speed cameras as they require a picture of the face and the number plate.
(Michael Shaw - 19th Jul)

* From the Grimsby Telegraph, Saturday July 19th:

GOODIE, BILL'S ON HIS WAY
David Laister
Business Editor
10:00 - 19 July 2008
Television presenter Bill Oddie will be in Grimsby next week to celebrate the official opening of town bird seed firm Haith's new site.
And fans of the BBC Spring Watch show are welcome to join in the fun at the new Europarc premises.
From 1pm on Thursday, Bill will be available to sign books and pictures, before giving a short speech to mark the move.
As reported in Business, the company has moved from Park Street to the state-of-the-art 30,000 sq ft building on Genesis Way, a decision made to help grow the business as it looks to become a mainstream supplier to supermarkets.
Haith's mascot, Clair the Canary will be giving out goody bags and balloons, there will be children's entertainment and an exotic parrot display.
Bill has worked with Haith's for several years, and the brand that bears his name has seen huge growth in recent months.
(21st Jul)

* Weds, 6 Aug - "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" with Bill is repeated on Dave at 21:00.
(29th Jul)

* Judging from the image of the cover now available on Amazon's website (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Autobiography-Bill-Oddie/dp/0340951923/ ), Bill's autography (scheduled to be published Sept. 4th) is to be entitled "Bill Oddie: One Flew into the Cuckoo's Egg".
Here's the current description from Amazon:
"Whose first records were produced by George Martin, and who had two singles banned by the BBC? Who earned rare reviews on Broadway for his dancing? Who rode on the back seat of the Goodies trandem? Who has been called 'Britain's best-known birdwatcher'? Who had his first clinical depression in his 60th year, and has only just discovered why? Who has written an autobiography that is as witty, candid and unconventional as the man himself? The answer to all of the above is Bill Oddie."
(3rd Aug)

* Interestingly, it's also available through Amazon in the US---with a slightly different description (and no cover photo!): "Comedian, birdwatcher, writer, environmental campaigner. Who is the real Bill Oddie? Best known for the wacky humor of the Goodies, and the irrepressible enthusiasm of his nature programs, off screen there has been a darker side. Bill has suffered from bouts of depression which have more than once taken him to the brink. Now he is back in control and wiser about the causes and the cure. Here he describes the childhood blighted by the absence of his mother who had been committed to a mental asylum when he was small. It was a lonely and difficult start to life, but there were to be happier times. Touring with the Cambridge Footlights in the 1960s saw him alongside the greatest comic talents of his generation-John Cleese and of course fellow Goodies Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden. Soon the Goodies were to become one of the biggest comedy hits of the 1970s-bringing a new brand of surreal humor to our screens. Now as Britain's favorite birdwatcher Bill has turned his private passion into his most public role and hosted more than 20 nature programs for the BBC. He has also become a fervent and outspoken campaigner for the environment. It has been an extraordinary and far from straightforward journey. Bill Oddie takes us along with him in a memoir which is as witty, candid, curious, and as unconventional as the man himself."
(KC Jones - 3rd Aug)

6. FEATURE ARTICLE
******************
(by John R. Jones)

I eat so many Chunky Kit Kats I have earned that nickname and consequently reworded The Funky Gibbon to reflect me eating The Chunky Kit Kat.
Some like it, but then it all depends on taste (pun intended).

Come on everybody, it's KitKat time!

We're consumers, out on top
We've just been down to the shop
We saw some KitKats in a box
On a shelf by a lot of socks
It's not hard, so let's all chew
A Chunky KitKat, chew, chew, chew

[CHORUS:]
Chew, chew, chew a Chunky KitKat (a Chunky KitKat)
We are here to show you how (chew, chew, chew)
Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat (a Chunky KitKat)
It's just like you
So come on and chew
A Chunky KitKat now

Sweets are always yummy
Which fill up your tummy
But Gibbons only like to eat KitKats (Boop, boop, she-boop)
You be like that monkey
Get a little Chunky
And in a while, start to smile
Gibbon half a chance

[REPEAT CHORUS]

Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat
Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat

G, the world would be good
I, oh how nice it could
B, with just a little Chunky take (Sha, la, la, la)
B, just like that Chunky
O, and feel the rhythm
N, in your groove, and dance up to
The planet of the apes

[REPEAT CHORUS]

Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat
Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat
Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat
Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat

Now, everybody get ready to chew their Chunky KitKat!
(Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat)

Take the wrapper off with ease
And reach one arm up to the trees
(Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat)
Let your wrist go limp like a bent baboon
Get ready to chew your KitKat soon
(Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat)

Now will you give me a "Chew"? (Chew!)
Will you give me another "Chew"? (Chew!)
And will you give me a "Chew"? (Chew!)
Now put 'em together and what have you got?
(Chew, chew, chew, etc)

[REPEAT CHORUS]

Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat
Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat
Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat
Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat

{album:} He promised to buy me a box of new KitKats for everyone to chew, chew, chew...
...
{episode:} Tie a yellow KitKat round the old ... tie a KitKat round the old oak tree

Chew, chew, chew, a Chunky KitKat
A Chunky KitKat!
(Chew, chew, chew, whoop, whoop etc)
