REVIEW: I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, Southport Theatre Sep 30 2009 by Peter Elson, Liverpool Daily Post
LIKE a comedy comfort blanket, the I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue stage show wrapped itself warmly around a packed Southport Theatre.
The stage version of the iconic, yet iconoclastic Radio 4 antidote to panel games was indistinguishable from its parent, complete with series producer Jon Naismith acting as warm-up man.
Barry Cryer, Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor have been panellists with the radio show for 38 years – and that’s as long as I've been faithfully listening to it.
Like many of the audience, I could mouth along to some of the routines, such as the Julie Andrews Censored Song Book.
So-called “newcomer” Jeremy Hardy has been with this celebration of silliness for years and is equally adept at the quick wit for which the show is famed.
But the big problem has been finding a substitute chairman for the late, great Humphrey Lyttleton.
Luckily, his successor here, Jack Dee, has a comic persona strong enough to effortlessly anchor the mayhem.
The panel may be looking a bit jowly, paunchy and grey-haired, but their enthusiasm and comic timing are undimmed.
But then, what’s not to like in a show where you walk away at the end of the night with a free kazoo?
