updated ratings info for "Return of The Goodies"
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesThanks for Cameron Y for passing along the following:

"You might like to know that BARB have published the ratings for the week ending January 1st and it makes for even better viewing.

Return Of The Goodies was watched by 3.44 million and was the third most watched show on BBC2 that week. Also almost a million people switched over when it ended as Room 101 that followed showed a drop in audience. Now imagine what would have happened if the BBC showed a repeat of The Goodies instead?"

Hopefully the excellent ratings, as well as lots of feedback from fans, will encourage the BBC to finally repeat some episodes of The Goodies.  Remember that suggested contact addresses for the BBC can be found in the club FAQ at http://www.goodiesruleok.com/faq.php?topic=5#faq49.

Listen Again info for Tim, Graeme, & Bill interview from this morning
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesAll three Goodies appeared on Fred MacAuley's show on Radio Scotland this morning for a lighthearted discussion about the lack of Goodies repeats on the BBC and other issues.  The show can be heard using the Listen Again feature; I assume it'll be available until next Monday's episode airs.

To hear this show go to
http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/view/show.shtml?macaulayandco
and click on the "Listen Again" link in the upper-right corner of the page (next to the orange dot).  When the BBC Radio Player window opens scroll down the "A-Z of All Shows" list until you find "MacAulay and Co".  Click on the blue "MON" underneath it (to hear the Monday show).  The full show is 90 minutes; the Goodies appear at around the 47 minute mark.

If you're looking for information about the currently available Goodies DVDs (which Tim mentioned several times during the interview) please visit our FAQ at http://www.goodiesruleok.com/faq.php?topic=5#faq16

update: Graeme & Tim on Radio Scotland Monday (9 January)
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesGraeme and Tim are scheduled to call in to Fred MacAuley's Radio Scotland radio show this Monday morning.  The show, MacAuley and Co., airs from 9:30-11:00am and can be heard online at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/view/show.shtml?macaulayandco. I believe it will be available via Listen Again after the broadcast.  Some of you may recognize Fred's name as he has appeared with Tim & Graeme in "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue".

Originally only Graeme was scheduled to appear, so as of this posting the website still reads, "Goodie, Graeme Garden chats about the campaign to re-run classic episodes of the 70's comedy. Fred and Alison offer PR advice on how to re-launch the show for the 21st century."

The webpage lists a call-in number ("Call free on 0500 92 95 00 or Text 80295") so perhaps there will be an opportunity for fans to call in and register their support.

Requesting repeats of "The Goodies"
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesSince "Return of the Goodies" aired on BBC 2 last Friday a lot of people have asked how they can request repeats of the original series.  It's best for people in the UK to contact the BBC; suggested contact addresses can be found in the club FAQ at http://www.goodiesruleok.com/faq.php?topic=5#faq49

Please note that letters or calls from individuals are considered to be more effective than petitions and other sorts of organized campaigns.

BBC 2 spokesperson "wouldn't rule out" Goodies repeats
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesI found the following at
http://www.waveguide.co.uk/latest/news060104.htm#Goodies%20-%20Repeats. It largely repeats the content of the BBC News article from a few days ago (which can be found at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4581330.stm) but there are a couple of interesting additions, most notably comments from a BBC 2 spokeswoman saying they wouldn't rule out the idea of Goodies repeats given the audience interest.

Goodies - Repeats

Goodies founder Graeme Garden said today he was "delighted" that the trio's nostalgia show Return of the Goodies attracted 3.3 million viewers.  BBC Two's show on December 30 December show gained "a pretty respectable viewing figure for a nostalgia clip show", he said.  But Garden said he would not pressure the BBC to repeat the original series.  "We've been doing that for 25 years without success. Perhaps now it's time for others to lead a campaign."

Garden said in a recent interview on BBC Breakfast that the show's were not repeated because it was disliked by a succession of BBC channel controllers.
He also ruled out remaking the series because current health and safety would prohibit some of the stunts featured in the shows.

A BBC Two spokeswoman said it was "too early to say" whether it would now repeat past episodes of The Goodies.  "But we certainly wouldn't rule it out given the audience interest," she said.

Garden said: "To put it in perspective I suppose it's worth noting that the wonderfully funny sitcom The Thick Of It only got about half that figure."

The surreal comedy series ran from 1970 until 1981 on the BBC First broadcast in 1970, surreal comedy series The Goodies starred Garden, Bill Oddie and Tim Brooke-Taylor.

Garden said the trio toured Australia last year, where The Goodies was regularly repeated on TV.  "We have a great fan base over there, many of them now 30ish, with kids of their own, who they are now educating with the Goodies DVDs," he said.

"Return of the Goodies" attracts 3.3 million viewers!
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesThe "Return of the Goodies" special, which aired last Friday night on BBC 2 in the UK, attracted 3.3 million viewers and a 14% share (I was told that BBC 2's typical share is about 9.3%).

Here's an article from BBC News at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4581330.stm:

Goodies call for repeats campaign

Goodies founders Bill Oddie and Graeme Garden have welcomed the fact that their nostalgia show Return of the Goodies attracted 3.3 million viewers.

BBC Two's 30 December show gained "a pretty respectable viewing figure for a nostalgia clip show", Garden said. The Goodies left BBC for ITV in 1981.

But Garden said he would not pressure the BBC to repeat the original series.  "We've been doing that for 25 years without success. Perhaps now it's time for others to lead a campaign."

A BBC Two spokeswoman said it was "too early to say" whether it would now repeat past episodes of The Goodies.  "But we certainly wouldn't rule it out given the audience interest," she said.

Return of the Goodies was the day's most-watched programme on BBC Two, watched by 14.2% of the available TV audience.  Garden said: "To put it in perspective I suppose it's worth noting that the wonderfully funny sitcom The Thick Of It only got about half that figure."  However, it was beaten in the ratings by BBC One's As Time Goes By and Midsomer Murders on ITV1, which drew seven million and 5.8 million viewers.

First broadcast in 1970, surreal comedy series The Goodies starred Garden, Oddie and Tim Brooke-Taylor.  It also spawned hit singles The Inbetweenies, Funky Gibbon, Black Pudding Bertha, Nappy Love and Make A Daft Noise For Christmas.

Oddie, who now presents BBC series such as Springwatch, said he was "pleasantly surprised" by the success of Return of the Goodies.  "But it was a shame we could only show clips, rather than whole episodes of The Goodies," he said.  "There are so many TV channels now, I would think someone could find space to repeat the original series.  "Maybe they could start a new channel called Can You Believe We Used To Think This Was Funny? The Goodies could go on there."

Garden said the trio toured Australia last year, where The Goodies was regularly repeated on TV.  "We have a great fan base over there, many of them now 30ish, with kids of their own, who they are now educating with the Goodies DVDs," he said.
