Celebrity scribblings on sale to raise cash for Westcountry wildlife

Monday, November 26, 2012

Bill Oddie, Joanna Lumley and Michael Morpurgo are among a host of celebrities from the worlds of stage, screen, sport and science to have put pen to paper for Cornwall's leading conservation charity.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust (CWT) invited actors, authors, comedians, painters and athletes to create "doodles" that could be sold in a fundraising auction online.

Appeal co-ordinator Dania Shaw said the organisation, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary, had been overwhelmed by the response.

"We are thrilled to have received such a large number of doodles from such a diverse group of celebrities," she said. "Bidding in the auction on eBay is expected to be intense and we are hoping it will raise more than £5,000 for Cornwall's wildlife and wild places."

The charity has already received 28 doodles, including contributions from actors Emma Thompson, Richard E Grant and Sir Ben Kingsley, playwright Alan Ayckbourn, comedians Jo Brand and Frank Skinner, film director Michael Winner, Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, broadcaster Chris Tarrant, illustrator Michael Foreman and singer Daniel O'Donnell. So far, the highest bid – £200 – is for St Just artist Kurt Jackson's "doodle" of Cape Cornwall.

Conservationist, ornithologist and Goodies star Bill Oddie was the first to send his doodle. Entitled Never Mind The Pollacks, it is a drawing of whales singing a selection of songs, from "Whale Meat Again" to "Salmon-chanted Evening". As with all the doodles, the winning bidder for Bill's cartoon will receive an autograph verifying it as his original work.

Bestselling author Michael Morpurgo, whose books include Warhorse, Wreck Of The Zanzibar and Why The Whales Came, donated a crude drawing of an oyster catcher, accompanied by a passage explaining "now you see why I only doodle writing". And Alan Titchmarsh doodled a dolphin jumping over a penguin, with the accompanying caption: "Nothing in life is black and white – except us and zebras."

CWT trustee Keith Hambly-Staite said: "Our celebrity doodle auction offers a great way to get a piece of original art from celebrities and nationally recognised book illustrators, as well as supporting the work of an organisation that has been protecting Cornwall's wildlife on land and sea since 1962.

"The fun – and in some cases the fantasy – of the doodles reflects the work of the trust and all that can be enjoyed on wildlife adventures."

To bid for a signed doodle, visit www.cornwallwildlife trust.org.uk/doodle.
Bidding closes at 9am on Sunday, December 2.

I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue info about Xmas recording and start of new series
more from same (British Comedy)
British ComedyThe following is the latest newsletter from the official I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue mailing list.  Note that it includes information about requesting tickets for the recording of the London-based special Christmas edition (which takes place on 10th December).  It also includes the news that the new series of ISIHAC begins on BBC Radio 4 on 12th November.

Newsletter from I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue

ISIHAC NEWSLETTER

Dear I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue Mailing List Member

In celebration of 40 years on air, the ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue’ team will be recording a special extended Christmas edition of the programme.

The cast will comprise host Jack Dee, with regulars Barry Cryer, Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor, plus a guest appearance from Stephen Fry.

The recording will take place at 7.30pm (doors 6.45pm) on Monday 10th December in London at the Logan Hall, 20 Bedford Way, a 900-seat venue, which is part of the University of London. It was where we recorded the Sony Award-winning ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Christmas Carol’ back in 2003.

All tickets to the show are £7, and I’m pleased to report, in a bid to make the ticketing process as fair and as unstressful as possible, we are now in a position to allocate these tickets via a lottery system – something for which many of you have been asking for some years.

:
www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/shows/shows/sorry_i_havent_a_clue_dec12

Then click on the “Apply Now” box at the bottom right of the page, and complete the booking form. You can apply for a maximum of two tickets.

The closing time/date for ticket applications will be 4pm on Friday 9th November so you’ll need to complete your form before then.

After this time, the appropriate number of tickets will be selected by a random ballot, and the details of those selected will be passed to a third-party ticket agency who will complete the ticketing process. You will not be charged anything until this stage.

That’s about the size of it. Good luck to all who apply and I look forward to seeing you there.

Meantime, I’d like to draw your attention to the start of the 58th series of ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue’ on Monday 12th November at 6.30pm on Radio 4.

Also, please note that our brand new “I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue” book, released to celebrate this year’s Anniversary, is now safely in the shops. Here’s a link to it via our website (where you can order a copy on Amazon:

TUT article from The West Australian
more from same (British Comedy)
British ComedyThe following article (which includes a photo of Graeme) appears online at
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/entertainment/a/-/television/15154732/tricked-up-truth/  (BTW, Australian viewers note that you can watch the first two episodes of "The Unbelievable Truth" online at http://au.tv.yahoo.com/plus7/the-unbelievable-truth/)

Tricked-up truth

SHANNON HARVEY, The West Australian
October 18, 2012, 1:22 pm

He is one-third of the comic royalty that was The Goodies and the creator of Seven's new comedy game show The Unbelievable Truth. Now Graeme Garden - the former Goodie with the sideburns and glasses - guest stars on the show's second episode and puts our own comic trickster, Merrick Watts, to the sword.

"I set an elaborate trap for Merrick, and he falls right into it," Garden laughed. "It made me laugh a lot. He's a bright guy but hides it very well with the dumb act he puts on."

Garden, still with spectacles but without the sideburns these days, appears as a panellist alongside Australian comedians Sarah Kendall, Watts and the Chaser's Andrew Hansen. They all try to trick each other with truth and lies about topics such as tattoos, spiders and make-up.

Garden devised The Unbelievable Truth as a radio game show, which became a hit after first airing on the BBC in 2006.

"We thought it would be fun to mix up truth and lies and to get a lot of comedians to separate them out, and with any luck, they say a load of funny things," he said. "We've always wanted to turn it into a TV game show of sorts, but there's a similar show already on air here in England, so it didn't get across the line."

It wasn't until The Goodies' live comedy tour of Australia a couple of years ago that Hansen - who was hosting their tour - suggested they turn it into a TV show here. Under Garden's watchful eye, three of the Chaser boys - Hansen, Julian Morrow and series host Craig Reucassel - are driving the show for Seven.

"They're very amusing, those Chaser boys. They seem quite keen to get away from the naughty satire and pranks and do a bit of straight comedy. I don't know if they'll get paid more, but I guess they'll get sued less."

Other guest comedians in future episodes include Stephen K. Amos, Shane Jacobson, Tom Gleeson, Jimeoin, the Umbilical Brothers and Akmal Saleh. Garden got to know them all during taping of the shows while in Australia.

"I've been to Australia quite a lot doing tours and talks with Tim Brooke-Taylor and Bill Oddie. We've always found there to be a very robust comedy scene there. There seems to be a lot of funny ladies in Australia, which we have trouble finding in the UK.

"On the show we have Sarah Kendall, Claudia O'Doherty and Cal Wilson, who are all lovely and very funny.

"Kitty Flanagan is very sharp and lived up to her reputation as a rather naughty girl using a watermelon and a baby bump to tell truths and lies about childbirth."

Australia is the first country to turn Garden's radio show into a TV series. Perhaps that's not so surprising, as The Goodies were actually more popular in Australia than the UK. And that's no lie. Is it?
The Unbelievable Truth airs today at 9.30pm on Seven/GWN7.

photo of Graeme & the "Unbelievable Truth" team
more from same (British Comedy)
British ComedyThanks to Channel 7 for providing this photo and the following description:

"The Unbelievable Truth – Thursdays 9.30pm on Seven

Episode Two of The Unbelievable Truth features Merrick Watts, Sarah Kendall, Graeme Garden and Andrew Hansen.

Merrick Watts talks makeup and uncovers some hidden ingredients that aren’t so pretty. But are his makeup facts just made-up lies?

Sarah Kendall spins a web of lies on spiders, provoking a lively debate on their original ancestors.

Would a Goodie lie to you? Graeme Garden attempts to hide a bunch of unbelievable facts about China. As creator of the concept, will he have a completely unfair advantage? Of course he will.

Andrew Hansen bares all the facts on nudity - but is it really illegal for a soldier to pose without clothes? Seems Prince Harry missed the order.

Hosted by Craig Reucassel, The Unbelievable Truth is a game where comedians give entertaining presentations in which everything is untrue except a few strange facts. Guests try to pick the truth from the lies."
