Autumnwatch article - "Bill & Co wing their way back"
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesThe following article appears at http://icseftonandwestlancs.icnetwork.co.uk/icormskirk/news/tm_headline=bill-co-wing-their-way-back&method=full&objectid=20002524&siteid=60252-name_page.html:

Bill & Co wing their way back
Oct 25 2007
by Sarah Gaffney, Ormskirk Advertiser

AUTUMNWATCH is back on our screen in just over a week’s time.

Bill Oddie and Kate Humble are returning to West Lancashire with their BBC2 show filmed live from Martin Mere, Burscough.

The presenters will be at the centre every day, from November 5 to 15, filming all day events such as the bird migration at the mere and on the nearby coast.

As well as featuring the centre’s famous Whooper Swans there will be a specially designed Duck Cam floating on the mere.

There will also be infra-red cameras watching the beavers and the Super Whoopers’ progressed will be checked. They are the seven Whooper Swans who have been fitted with satellite tracking equipment so their progress from Iceland can be tracked.

Andy Wooldridge, centre manager, said: “Everyone at the centre is really looking forward to having Bill and Kate back here during Autumnwatch as the programme was so popular last year, averaging four million viewers a night.

“At this time of year, thousands of Whooper Swans and Pink Footed Geese gather on the reserve to form spectacular feeding flocks; the sound is amazing and will make very good viewing.”

During Autumnwatch there will be swan feeds everyday at 3pm and 3.30pm, a daily Autumnwatch tour at 1pm and a beaver talk at 2pm.

Visitors to the centre will be able to look inside the studio and chat to BBC personnel on Friday, November 9 between 10am and 12pm.

The BBC Radio Lancashire Bus will also be parked at Martin Mere for two weeks during filming.

Independent story about cuts to BBC Natural History Unit
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesThanks to David Balston for posting this information to the goodies-l mailing list.

An article from the 26 Oct 2007 Independent talks about the cuts to the BBC Natural History Unit, mentioning Bill.  The full article is at http://news.independent.co.uk/media/article3098854.ece.  The first few paragraphs are quoted below:

BBC flagship Natural History Unit budget to be cut by a third
By Ciar Byrne, Arts and Media Correspondent
Published: 26 October 2007
The BBC's plans to slash by a third the budget of its world-famous Natural History Unit, the home of Planet Earth, have been condemned as "short-sighted" and "draconian" by programme-makers.

As part of 2,500 job losses across the BBC resulting from a below-inflation licence fee settlement, £12m is being lopped off the £37m budget of the Natural History Unit, which is based in Bristol, with 57 out of 180 staff posts being axed.

Programmes being dropped include BBC2's Wild strand presented by Bill Oddie – as well as one-off 30-minute shows and short series made for the 7pm slot on BBC1, which is now taken up by The One Show. The unit will also make fewer "adventure" programmes – titles such as Amazon Abyss, and Incredible Journeys and Jaws In Britain fronted by the vet Steve Leonard. The popular Big Cat Week would only be brought back as a single-evening event.

Although the BBC has pledged to continue to make landmark series such as Planet Earth, in the future it will not make two in one year as has happened this year with British Isles: A Natural History, and Life In Cold Blood, in which David Attenborough explores the insect world.

A breakdown of the posts which are being axed in the Natural History Unit includes 10 out of 25 producers, nine out of 17 assistant producers, 23 out of 33 researchers, and 11 out of 37 production management jobs. In addition, one executive producer and two series producers will lose their jobs.

UK Goodies DVDs on sale at Amazon & Sendit.com; 2004 US DVD back in stock
more from same (The Goodies)
The GoodiesAll three 2-DVD Goodies sets are on sale at Amazon.co.uk and Sendit.com for under £8 each.

"The Goodies...At Last!" (Region 2), "The Goodies - At Last a Second Helping" (Region 2), and "The Goodies - The Complete LWT Series" (Regions 2 AND 4) are £7.39 each at www.Sendit.com (which also offers free shipping for all UK and Ireland orders).  Each of these three sets is £7.97 at www.Amazon.co.uk (which has free UK delivery on orders over £15.00 and will remove VAT charges for overseas purchases).

While we're discussing Goodies DVDs, the 2004 US release is back in stock at www.Amazon.com (for a while it appeared this title was out of print).  This is basically just a copy of the BBC "Kitten Kong" video transferred onto DVD (with no restoration or special features), but certainly worthwhile for US fans who haven't otherwise been able to find NTSC format Goodies episodes.  This is also, so far, the only DVD release of the episode "Scatty Safari" (though with the same edits as the VHS release).  The other two episodes on the disk are "Kitten Kong" and and "Scoutrageous".

Win TLC on DVD
more from same (British Comedy)
British ComedyThe UK comedy site Chortle is giving away 10 copies of the forthcoming "TLC" DVD; Tim Brooke-Taylor was a member of the cast of this 2002 comedy.

The contest is at http://www.chortle.co.uk/about/2007/10/21/5937/win_tlc_on_dvd  Here's the blurb from that page:

Hospital sitcom tlc – described as ‘Cardiac Arrest meets Srubs’ – is out on DVD next week, and we have ten copies to give away.
The surreal show features Alexander Armstrong, Richard Griffiths, Reece Shearsmith and Tim Brooke-Taylor and originally ran on BBC Two in 2002.

Dr Flynn (Shearsmith) is a naive young surgeon starting out at the South Middlesex NHS hospital where he is taken under the wing of the laid back and cocksure Dr Noble (Armstrong), to deal with bizarre patients, idiotic staff and the reckless medical team.

The series is being released on Metrodome on Monday, priced £15.99 for a three-hour disc.

But to stand a chance of winning one of our copies, just answer the following question by November 5, when the winners will be drawn from all correct answers received. Good luck!

Which comedy team is Reece Shearsmith a member of?

One of the choices is "The Goodies" - not correct, of course, but nice to see.

Jeremy Hardy tour dates
more from same (British Comedy)
British ComedySince a lot of club members are fans of Jeremy Hardy (who has worked with Tim & Graeme on "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" and "If I Ruled The World") I wanted to pass along this link to a list of his upcoming tour dates for October-December.  This includes the Linda Smith's tribute/charity fundraiser on October 28th.

While I haven't seen Jeremy's stand-up act, my understanding is that it is similiar to the material from his popular BBC Radio 4 series "Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation" (though, unfortunately, there's no singing  ).

After Croydon the team travels to Manchester for a recording at the Manchester Opera House with special guest Jeremy Hardy. The series finishes at the Broadway Theatre in Peterborough, where the guest is Andy Hamilton.
