and those tapes.. there pretty terible (the Umbrella Ones)..  they are chopped up taoes I had Again copies from rental) from 3 video tapes released in 1981-82-83 by EMI.  I remember I wanted one when i was about 12-13. but my dad wouldent pay the 98$ that the video shop wanted for it (video tapes were very expencive mid 80's)

Blimey I was 11 when Evertt's show was taken of the ABC, about 1986.  Im 33 now and have spen it seems like eons to get these.

And As Far As I Know Their Are Four Episodes On You Tube: series 2 ep1, series2 ep2, 1979 new years special and kenny everett television show 1981 (or 1982) BBC Christmas Special.

Kenny Everetts!!  you have some of those!!  ok hand em over !!!..  Ive been looking for complete KV shows for 20 years, (some of the very 1st posts made on the internet are me asking for these!!) all i've found is 1 complete one (series 2 epp 9) and about 10 (uk-gold edited ) ones plus the 3 Thorn-EMI videos i copied yonks ago.  and about 10 or so "off air" tapes made in the early 80 which are audio only.
What epps do you have?.    IM especialy interested in old ABC contiunity between shows logo's idents etc.  and in my 15 year serch on the net. Ive met no one who taped the Theams EV shows at all.

Ok about Blocky vids, Now ive done a load of reserch into this. and I'm afraid apart from a Guaiam Blur type of effect. there aint a thing that can be done..

Remember this and keep it your motto..

IF its blocky and badly compressed apart from "rubbing a load of vasoline" type of filter to try to "make it look better" you are stuffed.

My advice is to source a Tape copy yourself. 
It's like this..  If Im making say Dvd's of a particular show and 10 other guys are doing this too. wouldent you want to see some examples of the other guys work before doing it yourself?.  you might save some time.

its also like 78rpm discs and LP's..  Ive remasterd/restorded 10's of thousands of these buggers,  (see my blog ade42.blogspot.com) and when ever Im doing this for someone they think i can make thier disc sound like a CD recording.  They then crow on about how some film they have seen has been remasterd, bla bla bla. and how it looks very good now..

No what they have experianced is this.  for the last 30 years they have seen a (TV PRINT) of thier fav film,  when released on VHS the film compainy used a simular US copy, one used on TV etc. when the film get released onto dvd. they need a widescreen print of it. as all the privious DVD's VHS' TV copies were pan and scan.  now this usally means Re-Scanning the Negs. or a clean Positive Print. now the film copany does this and uses a but of colour correction before mastering a dvd.  so when my cusomer sees the film in thier eyes some clever sod had made the version they knew a million times better,  they think its some kind of magic, and these days people EXPECT this from dvd compainies. and this that a team of highly trained REMASTERERS do this work..  Unfortantly it's all bullshit on a grand scale. they have seen a diffrant print of the film, one higher up the chain.
so they think if they bring me a worn out LP or 78rpm. I can magic away all the noise and make it sound like it was recorded yesterday.  I can manage most of this but not Inventing frequencys.

Say for example your 78 had a frequency responce up to 10khz (from the 40's 12khz was the norm)..  now a cd goes to 20khz.  so where can i "invent" all this top end.. well i can't,  no matter what i do apart from inventing a time maschince is NEVER gonna Create something from nothing.  sure put a bit of reverb on it and stuff.  but nope it aint real.

same goes for  blocky vids. you are never going to invent the pixels that are missing (otherwise some of the silent Laural and Hardys Ive been watching recently would not look so bad! and hey they could be in coulor and have a surround soundtrack) 

there are many copmanies selling software that proport to "clean up youtube like video's" I have looked into most of these and yes again all it is is a effect.  none are really making it any better. just smoothing the stuff out..

Vdub has a "deblocker filter"

This appanrtly does the trick.. but again it just smooths things out.
al you can do is spent a 16 year search like myself to try to find some one who will lend me the tapes.

For the below clips
I used

Vdub
Flaxen's VHS filter  (pre Noise reduction) and (Post Sharpining)
That was from a DV sourse of the video tape (6 gigs per goodies epp)

Then to Encode the DV stram i use Canopus Procoder (ive experimented for years with dozens of top shelf software , Have a very keen eye for detail. and have found it the best) of course I encoded the video at 9100 Bitrate .  1 hour 6 mins per dvd.  no point in trying to put more on a dvd it really starts to "suffer"

the audio side is a bit of a secret.!! 
Ive written my own filters and processors etc and use some "brand name" gear and plugins too.  See my Blog., Im trying to get into archive audio restoration!!

Vdub is free and so is the filter!!

A Collection of goodies..  Yep I know its on youtube.  But I'm "Remastering" all the goodies epps on DVD for us to "share"

as a stickler for quality Im putting 2 epps on each DVD,  (what you may say are you MAD)

its a bit cut directly from the DVD i made.
see  there's none of the little Mpeg Artifacts, Blookyness and genral bad compression>?  That most goodies "home made's" have looked like Eh?
Looks might fine dosent it..


as they are from the DVD files ive made you will see some "interlacing" this is not present when watching it from disc.
so do you know someone with A Collection of goodies so I can make the set compete. and we can start to "share" these!!!

Since starting this set Ive been lent a VHS tape of caught in the act.  Its from the same VCD type of thing weve seen over the years (as divx or whatever) but as its from TAPE it dosent have all the rubbish compression that we have been used to.
