This is your strife, Michael Aspel Jan 1 2008 by Peter Elson, Liverpool Daily Post
Is it the end for Aspel? With Liverpool his last stop hosting the Antiques Roadshow before retirement, where does broadcasting’s famous silver fox go now? Peter Elson asks the man himself
HE IS undoubtedly Britain’s suavest former drainpipe-layer, who started his working life as a publisher’s tea boy, quenching the thirst of our leading writers.
After this eclectic start, Michael Aspel’s career has run through the golden age of television, through news and light entertainment to the Antiques Roadshow.
His durable persona allowed him credibility as both a serious BBC newsreader and acting as Corporation straight-man when tormented by comics like The Goodies and Morecambe and Wise. . . .
But he made a far bigger impression being squashed by a giant kitten’s paw on The Goodies stuck in many viewers’ memories.
“When we were doing the Antiques Roadshow in Australia did constant radio interviews for two days after filming finished,” says Michael.
“All they wanted to hear about was The Goodies. It was like going to Japan and having to discuss some esoteric thing.
“I get regular cheques from the BBC for 37p from every time they show it.”
