Festival Fringe breaks its ticket sales record
PHIL MILLER, Arts Correspondent June 22 2006
The success of Edinburgh Festival Fringe continued to grow yesterday when it announced it had broken its ticket sales record. The festival sold 56,368 tickets in the first week, the biggest-selling opening spell in its history. Numbers are up 8.3% from the previous highest sale, in 2004.
Paul Gudgin, director of the Fringe, said: "I'm very pleased with sales. Thousands are getting hold of tickets for favourite shows earlier than ever."
So far, top sellers are Bill Bailey, Ed Byrne, The Goodies, Danny Bhoy and Russell Brand.
In 2004, 51,683 had been sold at the seven-day mark. In 2005, the number was 40,479. Half of the tickets sold on the first day were booked via the website, www.edfringe.com and that rose to 70% through the week. Last year, 1,338,550 tickets were sold – the third time and third consecutive year numbers passed one million.
