At one point, he claimed that - just like the trees - his hair had not just turned red but all fallen out.  He pulled off his hat to reveal (a la Earthanasia) a bald pate, but it was just a very bad baldy wig!

Thanks for posting and assurance.

After my computer crashed, it wouldn't let me open that video without a plug-in and got lazy about doing without knowing for sure I'd see the hair.

Go onto http://www.bbc.co.uk/earth/nature/uk/autumnwatch/

Choose the previews and highlights and view the video of 'The beauty of autumn'

Not as red as it was earlier in the show but gives an idea!

Does anyone have a picture of Bill's autumn locks to post?

I've searched, but can't find one.

' [laugh] Reminds me of the story Tim tells about when he changed his hairstyle in the mid-1970's and some newspaper ran a story about it.  Hey, wouldn't it be fun to track down that article?

Do we know which paper it was or vaguely when?  I know it's mentioned on the DVD commentary, I think for The End, but unfortunately my friend still has my DVD's!

He also mentions it on the commentary for Change of Life so it could be it's around either of those dates (or any inbetween!). It's probably the Sun or the Mirror or something like that.

If some who actually has their DVDs could have a listen and tell me what's said I'll see what I can find although I can't make any promises!

Some tabloid reporting of the highest quality

Sunday Star, November 11, 2007

ODDIE HAIR DAY;
Birdman Bill goes ginger

TV TWITCHER Bill Oddie has got viewers in a flap over his new ginger barnet.

The 66-year-old stunned fans when he unveiled the radical colour on top-rated BBC2 wildlife show Autumn Watch.

The former grey-haired "Goodie" said he had dyed it because it was more autumnal.

But some viewers aren't so sure and suspect it's actually a WIG!

Now cyberspace is buzzing about the star's hair with fans speculating whether his inspiration was the tree which gives us syrup of figs (cockney rhyming slang for wig).

One said: "Is Bill Oddie wearing a ginger wig? - I think Bill Oddie has a comb-over thing going on as well. He doesn't seem happy with his hair at all the way he was."

Another said: "Bill Oddie wearing a wig? Or is it a back-to-front comb-over?"

While another added: "It's really strange. It's definitely dyed but is it a 'syrup'?

"If it isn't why doesn't he dye it green? It would help him blend in when he is out twitching."

Oddie revealed his new hair last week for Autumn Watch which he fronts with Simon King and Kate Humble and which ends this Thursday.

Bill told stunned co-presenters the new style was his "autumn look".

But the veteran presenter denied the change is a wig.

His agent David Foster said: "I think it's something he's done just for Autumn Watch. On the second programme he said it was his beautiful autumn colour. It's no more than a bit of fun. Bil l doesn't agonise over age. He' s very youthful."

A BBC spokeswoman said: "We are delighted that Bill Oddie' s role on Autumn Watch has gone straight to his hair."

Oddie made his name with the 1970s comedy trio The Goodies.
