Well I received my DVD through the post about 4 days ago. As a long time Goodies fan I have long been dismayed at the treatment the trio's output over the years. The lack of repeats in the UK and the sad deterioration that was seen in some of the material shown on UK Gold in the early 90's was a sad to experience and then see.
You all know the contents and the episodes contained so I won't bore you with that. The first think I do urge to watch is the restoration extra contained. It shows how much work and dedication has gone into re mastering these episodes, eliminating film sparkle, video defects and even cement damage. The final results are vibrant and refreshing to watch and listen to.
The added commentaries are fascinating. It's good to hear Bill, Tim and Graham reminiscing and with such humour too. Very informative. Little snippets of information are given away, like how they used to have the whole production team involved in the story boarding stages and the advantages that gave them.
I can't wait for Volume 2. |

Well, I s'pose I have to be thankful for small mercies - ANY Goodies DVD is better than none, though why we down here in the antipodes have to put up with second best (again) is beyond me especially when most subscribers to this heavenly site hail from OZ. To me, that says there is a vast market down here which has been largely ignored. I guess I'm more fortunate than most - I have around 28 Goodies episodes recorded from TV on video, but magnetic video tapes don't last for ever and once they're gone, they're gone. |

To paraphrase a certain radio jingle...(Video Goodies! Boom)
Alas I'm still waiting!!!
Any news on when/if/where this priceless article can be obtained in OZ (specifically Perth, WA)????

I would be wary of waiting -- it's been established at the 'Roobarb' D.V.D. forum <http://disc.server.com/Indices/148536.html> that the Australian release won't be the same as the U.K. one: there will be no restoration, and probably no extras or commentary either. The best bet is to import the U.K. release, since it's 'region 0' and will work with players here. |

Hiya,
Just to let you know that FOXTEL DID show the episodes with the fairy puff man, and the smut in Earthanasia! It was the ABC that chose not to show the whole episodes, as they cut them to bits. |

Here's one I just wrote:
It's arrived! Sure there's only 8 episodes with a couple of extras, but it's the GOODIES!!!!!
On this excellently restored two disc set we have:
Tower Of London, Gender Education, Kitten Kong, Goodies & The Beanstalk, Kung Fu Kapers, Lighthouse Keeping Loonies, Earthanasia & Saturday Night Grease.
They all look fab for their age. There are some bits (in TOL & Earthanasia) that have NEVER been seen on Aus TV (the fairy puff man, for one and about five minutes of smut in Earthanasia). The commentaries start a bit slow (Tim needs to speak into the mic) but there are some stories and insights, including an amusing reference to the Australian TV censorship. The 8 minutes of Broaden Your Mind is funny, but the best bit is seeing Jo Kendall (who was the female member of the radio show ISIRTA where the Goodies & John Cleese honed their craft). The outtakes is a number of attempts at two different scenes, the best bit being the record breaking attempt!
The picture is full screen, the sound is mono, there are no subtitles, there is no region coding. There are only 8 episodes (and NO pirate radio). Buy this disc and they will release more. Buy it for your friends (nearly christmas ). |

The Goodies At Last
DVD Review
by
Stefan Davenport
It was Monday it came thought my door
and when I opened it the joy I saw
for it was my Goodies DVD, Eight Episodes of fun
and then I watched them all one by one.
When you play these discs you will easily see
is how good the picture is of the holy three
for all these years the comedy has lasted
and add to that the episode have been digitally remastered
the first show is Tower of London or Beefeaters to some
and I believe that it was the very first one.
In this episode the goodies must find
the evil beef stealer whose out of his mind.
The 2nd episode is Gender Education
where the goodies are asked to teach the Nation
by making a film of how babies are created
however the film is soon hated.
and so Bill who thinks he knows best
becomes a TV Director who ends up a pest
for he wants more Guns and gore
and more sex, bullets, death and war.
The 3rd episode is the most well known
is it about a little kitten who is well grown
Kitten Kong is the name of this gig
and it stars a cat that is quite big
In this show the goodies help pets
as they all become self taught vets
and I have a little hunch
that this episode must be the best of the bunch
Snakes, chickens dogs and cats
Bush babes, ducks, mongooses and bats
The goodies try to help them all
but end up making a short kitten tall
Goodies and the Beanstalk shows the guys all broke
and they end up has homeless folk
for in order to made ends means
Bill sells the tandem for a tin of beans
and you can guess what happens next
it not what you think, in fact it's a little complex
It's a knockout, golden eggs and well all the rest
go and watch it and see how well you are blessed
For now it is on to disc two
for the next show has reference to Kung Fu
Kung Fu Kapers reveals martial art of Ecky-Thump
Where a black pudding is used to give a bump
Tim and Graham must save the day
or else bill will end up getting his way
t'Parliament is where bill wants to rule
but who will end up losing there cool
Lighthouse Keeping Loonies is the Goodies next chore
and the Goodies are now working offshore
Stuck in a lighthouse for the next five years
within 20 mins Tim is in tears.
They run out of fuel to control the light
so they dig for oil in the middle of the night
Bill finds north sea oil at the Lighthouse's base
but sets light to it and sends it to space.
Earthanasia is not easy to Rhyme
but the show give the goodies not much time
for the earth has agreed to blow up at midnight
which leaves the goodies 30 mins to put things right
The Goodies try to come to terms with their inner feelings
forgetting birthdays, missing Xmas and other dealings.
Tim goes mad and bill shaves his beard
Graham just thinks the other two are weird
Saturday Night Grease is the last on the list
and is one episode that should not be missed
no mixed dancing causes Tim to end up in jail
But the other two have an idea that can not fail
But the goodies plan goes astray
when the BBC get there way
The goodies end up dancing from the bill
and its got an ending that will thrill.
There a lot of extras to be had
these discs are full of, which makes me glad
This DVD has had a lot of work and care
This is one of the best DVD's I swear
Storyboards. Out-takes, Commentaries for episodes 3, 4 and 6
that is just the start of the tricks.
The Goodies and the Beanstalk has a Laughter-free track.
This DVD is like Santa with the gifts in his sack
Surviving 'Broaden Your Mind' footage is also there
Digital restoration feature, this DVD is a lovely affair.
For I now wish there was more
a 2nd DVD is on for sure.
They look like they were made only the other day
and I hope the 2nd DVD is made this way
For I am only 28 years old
and the Goodies to me were just pure gold
I cant remember the goodies that well
but watching his DVD has put me in a spell
of watching the goodies when I was a boy
and watching the goodies now has giving me much joy.

The next issue of the Goodies Fan Club Clarion & Globe will come out around May 12th. Obviously there will be an article about the new DVDs/VHS sets; we'd love to have input from the fans who have seen them.
If you'd like to post some comments about the new sets to this thread we'll compile them for the newsletter. |
